Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
One thing that is really irritating me at the moment is when some TV channels that are specifically designed for young kids (Nick Jr, Tiny Pop etc) put inappropriate adverts on during the breaks.
This morning for example, I saw in the middle of Dora the Explorer (I think) an advert for the upcoming Xman 3 Cert 15. What?!!! It upset them somewhat to see a completely blue faced man with disfigured teeth etc. My kids will not see this film (not for a decade or so anyway) and it was completley inappropriate to show it at 7.30 on a dedicated toddler's TV Channel. It's not the first time this has happened and I'm sure not the last..... It almost defies having a watershed... |

I would seriously consider filing a complaint with the ASA. You can do it online: http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/how_to_complain/ |
Re: Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
My daughter has never been bothered about anything like that. She is 10 this year,I agree that the toddler channel its wrong to air ads like this but it would only be loads of ads for toys they will ask for.Anyhoo my daughter has from a very early age been able to differentiate reality from fiction and has known for yours that films are not real :) and has also for years enjoyed watching (slighty) scary films as she calls them .She will be watching x-men 3 as she has watched 1 and 2 when they come out.In fact its a shame its not getting a 12A
---------- Post added at 10:46 ---------- Previous post was at 10:44 ---------- http://www.odeon.co.uk/fanatic/film_...f10690/Xmen_3/ it is 12A not a 15 so thats where me and my daughter will be going during wit break :) As it turns out a toddler can see it (as long as with an adult) according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British...Classification |
Re: Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
I respect your right to parent your child in the way you see fit however, I operate on the premise that I will try to preserve my children's innocence as long as possible without unfairly enforcing immaturity. They will have to live with the harsh realities of this world for most of their life so providing them with a safe protective environment for as long as possible I think will provide them with an inner security and future confidence.
Children are growing up earlier and earlier and apart from peer pressure and the age of communication speeding things up I believe that some of this is due to some parents not preserving their children's childhood long enough. |

This is an old article, and is specifically targetted at food adverts, but here's some interesting info...

Re: Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
Interesting.
I wonder why the UK feel it's OK to show all kinds of adverts whereas other countries see reason to disallow any? |
Re: Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
Don't let them watch said channels then??

Please bare in mind the film board have not seen fit to make this a 15 its a 12A so a younger child can go with there parents |
Re: Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
just because a film is a 15 - 18 dosnt mean a trailer is. trailers are edited so they can be shown to a wide range of viewers.
ever been in the cinema waiting for some silly PG rom com to start and they are showing a trailer for a the latest horror movie but its edited so its a PG trailer. or u could always get your kids outside running around and having fun instead of watching tv ;) |

Re: Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
My point is around inappropriate adverts more then the Xmen really. However it's just not appropriate to show this however tame you feel it may be to children who are never going to see it. It's just capitalising on the probability of parents watching it alongside them.
Your 10 year old would probably not be watching this channel unless she happens to like programs aimed at 4 year olds. |
Re: Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
she used to though.I dont know what your trying to say there with no winks or smilies may well be offensive???

What I meant was as your daughter is not far off the appropriate age to watch this film the impact on her may be less than my 3 year old. So you could argue that it would be OK for this trailer to be aired on a channel aimed at her. However it is not appropriate on a channel aimed at a 4 year old. |
Re: Inappropriate Adverts on kids TV
And I do in all fairness agree with you ive just elaborated on my point :)
The only thing ever scared my daughter was then news about bird flu when they found the swan she was terrified (she saw it on the news at her mums not here I dont watch the news it scares me too lol ) and a person dressed as a ghost at Warwick castle ( we were going into a haunting type thing it was only a year ago the person on the door was made up as a ghost and said the ghosts inside favoured pink.My daughter had a pink t shirt on and the poor thing was well scared ) |
