three video tuners in the set-top will allow customers to record three shows simultaneously.
Nice!

With a substantial 160Gb hard drive, the device will be able to store up to 80 hours of content.
This is the capacity Sky offers in its 'enhanced' Sky + 160 service, but it seems it will be the standard for NTL. Nice again.

Some one kept that quiet since October.

Sounds good on paper :

and will have three video tuners, be Multi-Room capable, and have USB 2.0 and Ethernet connectivity. With a substantial 160Gb hard drive, the device will be able to store up to 80 hours of content.
Hope reality is worth waiting for and sooner rather than later.

I guess we'll have to wait and hope the Telewest/ntl merger goes ahead before we see anything like that.

Re: Scientific Atlanta to make pvr for ntl

oh don't say that please....:Yikes:

I have nightmares of the same fiasco that ntl commits now...
The merged Telewest/ntl future:
Some areas with a tested working PVR device, service and road map....(original Telewest regions)
Some areas languishing with chaotic mixes of stbs delivering comparatively fractured TV service & view services (ntl regions)....
No leveraging or synergies between the organisations to deliver a real competitive threat to Sky (and eventually BT)
at least from the PVR point of view....

Maybe I'm too close to this one. The most important service for me at the moment is a quality PVR - I current use TiVo - and it changes my viewing and TV use significantly.

The boxes are the same, except for the mpeg4 support (the ntl version also supports mpeg2). I expect Telewest will start distributing the mpeg4 version too once they are able to get their hands on enough of them.

The merger has gone ahead already. :erm: It happened a few weeks ago.

phew...you'll forgive my panic

---------- Post added at 17:37 ---------- Previous post was at 17:33 ----------

I'm sure that the merger has been completed from the point of view of shareholders and those who have money involved but for us mere customers I've yet to see any difference at all...heck there are still two sites and two very different sevices, etc.

Until there's something approaching a unified service (or at lesat the presentation of a unified service) I'll have to consider the merger a neat marketing ploy to bump up the share price and not look like quite so tasty a morsel for BT or Sky (sorry being a little cynic there)

services will take a while to come together, but gradually there will be similar prices for services. It might take months/years even before the systems work as one. But financially they are one company.

The biggest change so far is from the business sector which is now called NTL:Telewest Business.

I agree it will take time but it's the services that are most important for the customers. Matching up pricing is fine but if beneath that pricing is still a wild mish-mash of variable products and services and roadmaps the customers may be as frustrated as some are today.

As a small example, caller id available in some areas not in others but the "pricing" is presented to everyone...I know it's not TV but the principle is the same.

But will it be released in time for the World Cup?

Chatting to a Dixons bod at the weekend (while he was trying to sell me a 60" HDready plasma), apparently Sky are doing their damndest to get ths SkyHD box out for that.

I did dream for a minute or two about the tv, as it did look fantastic ;)

Telewest's PVR has already been released. I would imagine NTL will not be far behind.
