How to position a modem in the cable sequence

Hi
I have NTL Broadband via a set top box namely the Samsung SMT 2100C

Currently my cabling is as follows:
Wall socket to set top box, white cable with screw ends like ariel cable.
RJ45 from set top box to Netgear Wireless Firewall Router WGT624.

Here is my question:
It can work at 10mb instead of 5mb but I have to add a separate modem as the set top box modem is not adequate for the speed upgrade. Is this done by plugging a USB modem into the usb socket on the set top box and the router into the modem or is it some other setup requiring a cable from the wall socket into the modem.
The first seems logical but I thought I would ask.

Any other useful tips would be great please.

Howard

If a separate modem is necessary, NTL will install it and make their connection to it (the incoming NTL cable will be split two ways). You then connect to the new modem using a straight-through ethernet cable between the new modem and the WAN port of your existing router.

They have offered to install the modem for £50 but I have loads of redundant equipment so thought I could save £50 if the modem ran from the set top box and not from the wall socket.

It seems I may have been wrong and the £50 is for working on the wall socket and not just for plugging a modem of their choice into the set top box?

The NTL charge for this job is £50 regardless of the work they have to do (which might turn out to be quite extensive in the worst case).

I booked a service call from the "experts" so thanks for helping me make my decision.

Very helpful.

you could threaten to cancel your services they might wave the £50 it has been known to work
.
If you cancel you get a free install so why pay £50

Just a thought donot think they would want you to cancel,TV etc

I am happy to pay the £50 if its not just a case of giving me a modem I don't need/like and plugging it into the usb socket.

Mind you it is a bit of a cheek to expect a fee for a service which I already pay a lot for and doesn't always work that well.

quite true understand that other people have got it free and 3 months BB free as well .
Why as an existing customer should you pay more if you have had the service over 12 months its worthwhile sugesting or implying cancellation NTL have a retentions team that will give you the same as a new customer

When i phoned to cancel my TV (i am moving to Sky+ in January) as i need a pvr and NTL do not provide one, I was not offered any of these fantastic offers others say they have been given. All i was asked was"which day do you want it removed ?". I would not have taken any offer anyway as i want and need a pvr, A reduction or special offer would not have given me that.

I do not agree with all these offers that seem to be out there. Why should someone be able to phone up and SAY they want to leave and then be showerd with offers.

A customer is a customer if they have been with NTL for 1 day or 6 years and therfor everyone should have the same.

Quite agree bill thatys why existing customers should be charged the same as new ones . Nothing for a modem install, or should new customers be charged £50 that would cut down new customers.

Its about time NTL looked after existing customers not just signing up new ones

Note your moving to Sky never thought i would see the day:D:angel:

Its simple. I require a PVR.

NTL do not provide one.

Sky do.

Therefor Ntl tv removed Sky + installed :)

I still have and will continue to have Ntl Broadband, Ntl phone. I have never had any problems with them and cannot see a reason to change.

When Ntl start providing a Pvr and if its better than the one provided by Sky then i will dump Sky and move back to Ntl for my Tv.

Hope that clears that up for you :) :D

My own feelings are that there should be NO cost to upgrade to 10 meg for anyone. I feel that Ntl have made a mistake by chargeing for the upgrade of the modem.

If your company never offers discounts to others I'll eat my hat thanks :)

Engineers rarely know about what the sales bods are dishing out :)

Personally I think this £50 is tosh as well though, if ntl aren't getting kit that's fit / suitable for purpose that's not really the problem of customers, especially equipment that was bought in in no small part to service higher internet speeds.
