how do i prove
hello,
i am new at this and am also at work so i cant give you any details about my computer. anyway i am using ntl 1mb broadband but i am having problems with it. the problem is that sometimes it works, sometimes it works and then stops, and sometimes it does not work at all, it always works if u reset the modem. anyway i been phoning the tech support people loads and they come up with 3 different problems with my computer plus one idea about how to use my broadband 1: Its My Firewall.. if that was true how come it works sometimes with no problems, surely it would not work at all. i dont want to run it without a firewall but have disabled it and it does the same thing 2: its my USB port: i change my connection over to a network card, when i phoned them up to help me reconnect, the lady said there was a problem with my modem and i have to phone and book an engineer. when i did this, they said there was nothing wrong 3: that i had a virus: i am using norton suite and it found nothing they suggusted that when i turn my computer off, to turn my modem off and then just before i start my computer on, turn my modem on is there anyway i can prove that its the modem and not my computer as my parents want to get rid of it all together? rob |
Re: how do i prove
firstly i would connect to the modem using ethernet if you can.
secondly i would boot the PC into safe mode and then run a speed test. This will ensure that there is no firewall or any applications running in the back ground |

Re: how do i prove
Did you reboot the modem after switching from using the USB cable to using an ethernet cable? If not, then you will need to do so.
---------- Post added at 12:49 ---------- Previous post was at 12:48 ---------- Oh, and when using the modem via an ethernet cable, you won't need to install any drivers for the modem if you are running Windows XP (and 2000 if I remember correctly) |
Re: how do i prove
i think i did but i will try it when i get home.
thanks robert |

I think Its time for ntl to make ethernet the default installation method. Lets face it it would cut down calls to tech support. Worked for a adsl providor with usb only modems and a large % of calls where lost driver discs, problems after re-install of OS etc. With ethernet an xp pro pc will pick up the ethernet internet connection and configure it automatically most of the time during install. |

Re: how do i prove
Ive always used Ethernet and even with a fresh install of XP, you plug it in and internet explorer picks up the connection straight off. No configuring, nothing ;)

Re: how do i prove
thanks for your help but i tried to use ethernet and it did not work. i tried reinstalling the drivers for my modem and it said that my modem was faulty  evern when i tried to reinstall in on usb
thank goodness for norton goback :) |
Re: how do i prove
It may not have anything to do with it but I see lots of posts that seem to suggest that Norton can cause as many problems as it purports to fix.
The sometimes it works and sometimes it don't seems to be a common denominator of the threads I have read. The Norton app usually accredited to being the problem maker is NIS. It is reported to be a b****r to to get off your puter. Some saying the only way is a complete reinstall. I've had no personal experience and frankly as I wouldn't let any of that c**p near my machine, I hope not to gain any. |
Re: how do i prove
that all maybe true but what firewall do you recommend then? plus i use all the other bits of their suite (anti-virus and the such like)

Re: how do i prove
It sounds like you have a signal problem to me, I had the same problem, you need to ring NTL and ask them to ping your modem to see the Db level of the signal.
IF Db is: -5 or below, OR, +5 or above this might be your problem. |
