Moving from USB to Ethernet
Hi all
I have used Ignitions template to answer the main questions: 1)What, specifically, is your issue? I am unable to connect to the Internet using an Ethernet cable (supplied by NTL). a) Is there a specific time that this issue is most prevalent? no. It is all the time. b) How long has this issue been going on? (days, weeks, months etc) 1 day. 2) Do you have cable TV? no If so, is there any reception degradation? no 3) Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say? No. 4) What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? Tried to reboot modem. (aka: if you haven't tried to help yourself, why should *we* help you?) 5 Who you are and what you have: James a) Where in the country are you?UK b) What is your operating system?W2k SP4 c) What is your home network setup? None. Provide details. d) If you have more than one computer, is the problem occuring on all other machines?N/A e) Are you running a firewall of any sort? No Have you ever installed one? Did you try to turn it off during troubleshooting? Thanks in advance! ;) |
Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
Is the ethernet card installed properly?
Drivers up to date? Internet set to connect via LAN? :welcome: by the way.... |

Perhaps it is just disabled |
Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
You haven't really described your problem well, you say you are moving from usb to ethernet, so you had a connection with usb and all worked well. So you should then have to to reinstall broadband installer v2.o to reconfigure your computer to use ethernet, if you have done this did you pass all the configuration tests and did it tell you successfully installed etc, ie you setup your internet account again with ntl.Your network card at back off computer should have two small lights that flash when ethernet cable is plugged into network card that tells you connection is ok.If your network card is built into motherboard is it enabled in the bios setup

Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
Royaltiger, please dont give advice that is totally wrong, you don't need to reinstall the Broadband Installer for Ethernet at all. In fact, you don't really even need it for USB, all you need is the USB Driver for the Modem from the CD in that case.

It may be worth checking through the relevant bits in http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.../basicset.html just to try & see if it is possibly a software/setup issue, otherwise I would have to suggest trying another lead, or even a different NIC??? |
Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
So if you dont need the broadband installer disc how do you set up your connection to ntl,do you just phone up and they say your connected, that sounds easier cant understand why they dont use that system for all customers, nine out of ten problems are instantly cured by reinstalling software properly, what i was stating was that we did not know what the actual error was so to give an acurate diagnosis

Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
If the service is enabled for you (as it should be already) you plug into the Modem and as long as the Modem is registered, the connection will work.

Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
Ok same questions What is you IP address? Go to start>run type in cmd (click OK) and then type ipconfig in the DOS screen
|
Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
It should do in theory but nothing is ever that simple, what i have found easiest to do in curing most problems is a clean install of the broadband installer as if it is the first time on your computer you are setting up a internet connection, this i feel is what jim28 should do and then see what happens, there is probably a configuration conflict between the usb and ethernet, at least after doing this he will have some idea what the problem was otherwise it should be all connected and working fine

Zeph is quite correct, royaltiger, it's not necessary to use the ntl CD to set up or renew a connection, except to install the modem USB drivers if you use USB: see the CF article on this. Additionally, as is usual with ISP-provided software - and ntl is no exception, the provided software is a source of far more problems than it fixes. You shouldn't install it in the first place and, if you have it installed, you would be wise to uninstall it. Of course, like much badly written software, it can be problematic to remove properly. See Chris W's guide to removing it here. |
Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
The cf article was good so why if this is the better way to install your internet connection is it not distributed by ntl, also how do you obtain an email address, i will eat humble pie if this is the right way and you learn something new all the time which i have now done, i must be lucky i had no problems installing my internet as with a few friends and will try out without the ntl installer. There is no worry on the medic i dont have that installed

Re: Moving from USB to Ethernet
Doing this every day in work here is some info on whether or not you need the CD.
It was designed for people with varying computer knowledge to make it easier to reinstall your connection However it is not needed once you are registered with ntl for changing to an ENET connection. It can be used for USB or ENET reinstall or removing the USB drivers and house moves as described by other members above. However when changing from USB or adding an enet connection the easiest way to do it is to power off the modem add the enet cable to PC and modem and start the modem, there is no need to shut down the PC (check robin walkers site for various modem light sequences) when the lights have settled make sure your AV and firewall are up to date and try browsing the web, job done. |
