Strange IP address from Neath whilst I am in Swansea

Hi All, I am Not a teky bloke so I get confused on times. On checking my Router I find that besides my Desktop, D-Link (NAS) Printer I also have Three IPs from same address in Neath. I am in Swansea. One of these Neath connections is through my WN3000RPv3 Wi-Fi 2.4g VM *******--The other says Unknown also in Neath PLus my Desktop says Neath as well. I can give you the IP of them if you want. I not come across this in over 30 years.

I'm in a New Address with a New Hub 4. Wondering if that Hub4 is a used one?? not new. Any Info to Appease my mind is Welcome.
I am in Sketty area Swansea.

Post the IPs but with the last digits obscured (like 86.26.102.*)

It's possible that VM have reused an old IP address range from Neath in Sketty, but not all systems have updated yet.

Hi spiderplant--196.168.0.* First three correct, also the others are same but last number from same address in Neath. All three last numbers start in sequence of one another. I'm baffled. Even my NAS, D-Link has the Neath number at end.

Are you sure about that ? That address range belongs to Africa.

When I check that IP range it comes up as VM, Liverpool.

Do you mean 192.168.0.*? If so, that's a private IP on your own network. As Paul says, 196.168.0.* is an African address (specifically in Mauritius).

Yeah, that's an example of an IP range that has been reused. Used to be Linlithgow in Scotland, now it's Liverpool

Today I get this Mac Address-EA-5B-A8-7F-4A-1E where my search says this--Does not Belong to any Registered Block. Not Detected. No Vender Exists. Can give you the FULL IP if you want. I have only had these strange ones since my new Router Hub4 was installed at my new address. My IP is Virgin 192.168.0.*

Re: Strange IP address from Neath whilst I am in Swansea

192.168.0.* are internal network addresses, not your external IP.
You are currently using a 86.7.78.* public IP address, which comes back as VM Swansea.

Re: Strange IP address from Neath whilst I am in Swansea

Paul, that is correct what you say. seeing as I not allowed to put in the last digit you have to guess it. It's taken me all day to find that one is my iPhone, the other my printer, but what confuses me is, the IP (both) is from an address in Neath. I'm miles away from Neath. It should be Swansea. That MAC address above is my iPhone. I'm NOT tek savvy so I get confused with most things. I not ever had this prob with Hub3. Perhaps you could tell me why I get the personal address in Neath and not mine.????THANKS.

I dont think you quite understand how networks work (which is fine).
You're looking at your internal IPs, assigned to devices on your LAN by your router.
They have no relation to your external VM IP.

Think of it like a hotel.
You have the hotel address (your VM IP)
Each room has a unique internal number (internal IPs).

Every hotel has its on unique address.
However, multiple hotels can all use the same internal (room) numbers.
In the same way multiple internal networks can use the same IPs ranges.

Thanks - I can confirm that is a Sketty CMTS 04 address

Why do you think it's a Neath address?

Ahhh! How fascinating. Why are IP ranges being reused

The IP ranges are in fixed sized blocks, and the sizes are powers of 2 (for example, 1024, 2048 or 4096 addresses). As the network usage grows, the blocks have to be moved around to avoiding wasting too many addresses.

I'm getting this also, and its because my Hub 5 has dropped out of Modem mode into Router Mode and Won't go back, I wonder if a firmware update went out recently breaking this mode.
