Whats causing this dudes??

2 Attachment(s)
Im hoping someone might know what exactly is causing this......

On several of my main shell windows, the size of it goes to far to the right, look at my example here and see how the right side is too wide...

The first time this happend I just deleted the shelliconcache but this time it didnt work.... Its been like this for about 3 years and im curious if someone might know??

This is Win98se in case ya dont realise........ Im just wondering if I could fix it somehow??

Some of my other menus are not the right size either..... Ill show one of my WMP menus also........ (Those are too wide (The text itself))

I feel terrible, this poor computer was abused by the people we got it from in 2001 (I think it was around there (I am just grateful 98se was on here (My favourite OS))) I have brought her back quite alot but she still is having some problems which I hope someone here may be able to help me with :)

Muchos Gracious!!

play with the resolution settings. Are you sure it is optimal for the screen?

you could perhaps try changing the font size to smaller

There will likely be somewhere in the reg can expand the sizes but I have no idea where to even start looking

You could perhaps run a search of the reg and search for in Find menuwidth

Thank you Jay,I was thinking it may be something to do with resoution settings but wouldnt that affect every single menu??

Ill try changing it to 640x840 and back and see what happens,it may be jammed....

Thanx buddy!

EDIT:

Nope..... Ill try other stuff..... It was wierd,I changed it to 640x840 and it changed and asked me if I wanna keep the setting... I didnt click YES or NO and went to look at one of the menus.... After about 10 seconds it aborted and went back to 800x600 (I hadnt clicked no yet)

Strange.........

Try making the font smaller. IIRC there were loads of settings for differnt fonts for different parts of the menus but it has been a long time

Thank you buddy......It just baffles me thats also.....

Like the file I have in my system directory..... Its 0 bytes .. I cant delete it,the file system doesnt see it.....I have tried everything I can think of........

The filename is: ________.__-

If I goto DOS it of course is not there..........

I’m sure the latest anti-virus updates for Win98SE would have picked one up…

Not sure about as far back as 98SE, but there might be settings for systems fonts and things like icon spacing. There may be apps still available for 98SE that allow you to change those and other settings (eg TweakUI).

Dude111 23-09-2023 20:42

Yes i have tweakUI..

I hate that whenever I open it,it adds itself to my startup entries!! (I have to keep going in and removing it)

The file has been there since 2015 (28/9/15 to be exact)

I dont remember what I might have been doing that might have created that file.........

Computers are a mystery I tell ya......

Dude111 10-12-2024 03:36

After I Played a game last night it me$$ed up some of my settings.... And I tried booting up in SAFE MODE and all the problems are gone........

What does this mean??

I know safe mode bypasses startup files.......... How would I find out which fiile is causing the problems???

Jaymoss 10-12-2024 08:35

Re: Whats causing this dudes??

edit your start up. Stop everything from running then add one by one

Dude111 10-12-2024 14:31

Da I suppose I could.....

After I booted up a few mins ago I checked how many files were accessed 10/12 and it said 263!!

It might be hard finding :(

EDIT:

I used MSCONFIG and selected "Diagnostic startup" and when I rebooted it said VSHARE.VXD was missing.... I used SFC to extract it from the cab files...... And I put it in the VMM32 directory........

What the hell is this file for???

Nothing has changed........ I was gonna try SELECTIVE STARTUP and disable "Process WIN.INI" and see if the problems are gone.......

EDIT2:

I tried disabling WIN.INI from being read on boot but nothing has changed.....

The computer seems to run fine w/o the data from WIN.INI so my question is why does it need that file?? (It runs OK w/o it)

Perhaps you should stop messing with the registry and other start up things if you don't know what half the files are or do.

I mean safe mode is pretty self explanatory. It disables everything apart from the bare minimum to get the system to boot in to windows.

As for Win 98. I think it's time for a new PC:D my current PC will boot in to Win 11 from power on in about 20 seconds ready to use. Though that mainly down to how fast modern NVME SSDs are.

640x480 would literally hurt my eyes. My smart watch has a better resolution than that.

As for the window and text, can't you widen or narrow the menu box by clicking and dragging? I know thats a thing now buts 26 years ago I can't remember.
