In my view, the ban and fine was not good enough. Even though McPartlin was fined £86.000. In my view the judge was too soft.

Drink driving is a serious offence. And someone could have been killed. Even pictures of him getting out for the car. He looked dazed.

The judge should have handed him a prison sentence.

if it is Joe Bloogs, they would have been banned and given 12 months.

Any other member agree or disagree. I read that the fine would only be 4.5 days pay for him.

Drink driving is one of the worst offences going and it ruins lives.

AFAIK it was a first offence so a one year ban appropriate compared to others.
Fines on the other hand IMHO should be all based on a percentage of income (above the base) to hit those with high earnings as much as those with lower.

No, he said it would take 4 to 5 days to pay, not that it was that amount of time to earn money. If there had been any serious injuries in the crash, I suspect a custodial sentence would have been handed down to him. As it is, a heavy fine and a ban plus a stint in rehab coupled with the downfall from grace will be sufficient punishment for him. I don't think Ant & Dec will be winning any NTA's next January.

You say that as though it's not a normal percentage but it is. People regularly only get fines of a few hundred quid along with their bans.

Actually, from what I read, he was sentenced under the same guidelines as anyone else. Guidelines which have been updated to make the fine a percentage of your income, which is better than a fixed fine, which unfairly persecutes poor offenders.


It is also worth pointing out that had he actually killed or injured someone, that would have been a far more serious offence, possibly attracting jail time.

Remember he also got banned for driving, which will hamper his career as a TV presenter. OK, so he can afford a driver, but that is extra cost he will have to pay. There is also the damage he has done to his own reputation, which will cost him.

He looked and sounded genuinely upset when he apologised. Yes, he could be an excellent actor, but having seen him in Byker Grove, I doubt he is that good.

I'm not defending him. He did a very stupid, wrong and potentially dangerous thing. But, I think he realises that and is sorry.

Using ‘Nor good enough in my view’, is not helpful, if the thread it about Ant McPartlin, then you should have used ‘Ant McPartlin’ in the title.

Exactly. You can't (legally or morally) simply treat someones mental health or disability and the effects thereof with indifference or say that its some sort of excuse.

It would be like telling someone off with dementia for forgetting things and then accusing them of saying that they were using their condition as an excuse not to remember things!

Having said that, fining a multi millionaire 2/3 of his £130,000 weekly wage won't exactly leave him starving. Fining someone on the minimum or even average wage 2/3 of it would cause them more problems, despite the fine being much less.

I think I may have been misunderstood my apologies and as someone whom has suffered from depression in the past I totally get that but what I was referring to is Stop drink driving, you could have killed someone therefore (tough love)

Sorry but I totally agree with this quote from Piers simply because as I know first hand how devastating the loss a drink driver can actually cause.

I don't think anyone who drink drives deserves sympathy and I'm not sorry for thinking this as a drink driver killed someone I knew and was close to hence the reason I feel so strongly, the only people whom deserve sympathy is the poor buggers left to pick up the pieces of their broken family through someones selfish behavior.

May I point out never once did I say I don't sympathise with someone who suffers from anxiety or depression because I do just not drink drivers I'm afraid.

Weenie, apologies if I was unclear.

I was highlighting Morgan’s comment, not criticising you - sorry if it came across that way; I didn’t mean to.

The drink-driving probably came about due to the mental health issues - there’s no excuse for drink driving, and I’m so glad no one was seriously injured; Ant needs help to get sorted out, as when your mind is in the pits of depression it’s very difficult to ‘sort yourself out".
