The senior Ukrainian prosecutor alleges that in 2006 Mr Manafort orchestrated a series of anti-Nato, anti-Kiev protests in Crimea led by Viktor Yanukovych’s pro-Russian Party of Regions — now designated a criminal organisation. The protests forced planned Nato exercises there to be cancelled. No charges were pursued because of a lack of evidence after Crimea was annexed. Mr Manafort did not respond to a request for comment.

What is supposed to be the direct connection to Donald Trump? Everything that is ALLEGED to have happened, did so, long before Trump's political ambitions.

He is the campaign manager (or was until today, there has been a shake-up so not sure whose were) and Trump is being accused of being 'soft' on Russia or even having links there. Trump has expressed anti-Nato sentiment and fudged the issue of Crimea.

Imagine this guy was employed by Corbyn.

And all that happened BEFORE any connection to Trump and BEFORE any political ambitions. So nothing to do with Trump.

He is, or was, the campaign manager for Trump. It's not good to have your campaign manager being investigated especially when it's linked to an issue you're already weak on.

I wonder if the Democrats have any 'October surprise' to leak? At the moment the negative stuff get buried by his own gaffs but if he stabilizes the ship they might want something in reserve to torpedo it.

It doesn't matter when it happened .Generally speaking the campaign manager and the candidate will be like minded

I think it highly likely that Trump new all about it .Even so putting all of Trumps outrageous statements about foreigners together with a dodgy campaign manager makes Trump highly suspect .It's about association.

Stuff like this won't hurt Trump.

Trump is basically running on the economy and security. His supporters won't give a toss about alleged dodgy deals in Crimea.

Unfortunately for him, people who aren't his supporters, but whose votes he needs to win, do care about stuff like this.

Trump is very dodgy on Russia and despite being asked multiple times to be transparent on his dealings in that area he has failed to do so, his campaign manager getting caught out i think is the tip of the iceburg and given trumps anti NATO and more pro Russia stance i think there is cause for concern
