Almost 2,000 Vodafone customers 'open to fraud'

Almost 2,000 Vodafone customers may be open to fraud after their personal details were accessed.
Criminals used customer details gained from "an unknown source" to try to access accounts between Wednesday and Thursday, the company said.
The telecommunications giant said 1,827 customers had their accounts accessed, with criminals potentially gaining their names and some bank details.
But it insisted its systems had not been breached.
Vodafone said its investigation and "mitigating actions" meant only a "handful" of customers had been subject to any fraudulent attempts to use their data.
Not had an email yet..

Considering how many customers Vodafone has then it is a really small amount. At least they were on guard and managed to stop it before they got more.

Still shouldn't have happened at all but at least Vodafone were proactive in watching out and resolving the attack asap.

If you weren't effected then you probably won't hear anything from them as the accounts effected were already blocked and customers notified.

The big worry in that how many more companies are playing fast and loose with our data with their distinct lack of proper security.

They aren't necessarily playing fast and loose.

If a hacker wants to hack in to something then even with the best security they will get in.

And still virtually every time I go into the bank I'm told I ought be banking online because it's so much easier and perfectly secure...

The trouble is Osem is so many of the bank branches have closed down thus its becoming harder to go into a branch nearby.

One thing I'm not going to do is use my smartphone to pay bills or pay for items at the shop counter.

Yes and that's all part of the strategy. Make it harder for people to use banks/cash in the traditional way and effectively 'force' them to bank online. I think it's appalling given what we all know about how hard ordinary people find it to keep their online activities secure.

We're always hearing about older people, often, who've been conned out of thousands because they've given away their PINS and passwords to convincing phone fraudsters. If these people had good old fashioned pass books to access their money this would never happen but they've been pushed into banking online because it's easier for the banks and frankly they have no idea how to stay secure.

Sadly our nearest bank branch closed several years ago and our nearest now is near on 5 miles away thus we have to check it online and thankfully we have had no problems yet.

Sorry but what has online banking got to do with an ISP that has had customers bank details hacked.

The ISP holds details for customers that pay by direct debit. SO I don't see how online banking comes in to it.

It's a natural progression to wonder how safe it is to rely on the internet for dealing with banking especially when using a Vodafone smartphone..

Exactly. What's a vodafone smartphone got to do with their storing of bank details for taking payments for your bills?

How and where they store your details is totally different than growing the web. Its the actual websites themselves that encypt your data. Not your ISP

I'm trying to link my Note 4s Tap & pay feature on my phone with my debit/credit card.

It'll be wonderful when the Snooper's Charter comes into law and all the ISPs have to start storing even more data for people to steal...
