Met Office loses BBC contract

I thought the 2 creaking dinosaurs fitted well together, but not always to our benefit.

Personally l always enjoyed their weather forecast so its a sad shame that there is a parting of the ways.

I don't see this ending well, so are we going to end up with BB Weather provided by accuweather or something.

Well we've had the wrong sort of rain, the wrong sort of snow and the wrong sort of sun so it was only a matter of time before we got the wrong sort of weather forecaster...

These are British companies; we should be supporting British companies. Unless you want to become entirely foreign-owned. It's time we began backing ourselves.

We now live in a global economy. The parochial approach does not give the consumer the best deal. Nationalism and protectionism are so last century...

This isn't really about protectionism though. At least I don't think it is. It's more than it makes sense if the BBC, a public organisation, used the Met Office. It depends who else they get but if they tend up giving it to someone marginally cheaper based abroad then isn't that a net loss for country given that currently that money goes to the Met Office and the staff they employ.

From what I understand, this has been on the cards for a while. The reason being that the Met Office have consistantly given wrong forecasts over the last few years, and the viewers are complaining to the BBC.

Well, yes it is! If you say that you will only give work to British companies, you are denying opportunities to the rest of the world, who may have better and cheaper alternatives to offer.

Where would we be without the Sonis and Samsungs of this world?

Quite. I am constantly amazed at the forecasts that come out of the Met Office. I look at the computer generated synoptic charts and I tell my friends what I think the weather will be like and then I'm alarmed by the forecast on the BBC News. Almost every time, my forecast is either spot on or essentially right and the Met Office are wrong. Furthermore, they change the forecast for a few days ahead on a daily basis.

Added to the professional incompetence, the local forecast is often diametrically opposed to the local forecast! Perhaps cynically, the Met Office think that if the local forecast says Bournemouth is going to be sunny and the national forecast portrays cloud along the south coast, they can boast that their forecast was correct! Well, at least one of them will have been!

I'm sorry, but if an amateur such as myself has a better record of forecasting than the Met Office, who have considerably more resources than I have to draw upon, it's time to change provider!

Yes, it's about time something was done.

BBC Weather forecast are terrible. We just hope that the Met office move over to ITV or even Sky.

I think that the BBC will rely on an oversea's company now.

It's always been a load of rubbish.
the only time they get it half right is when they look out the window the same time as you do.

even then it's raining. and they say the whole day is going to be cloudy.

People only notice the forecast if its wrong, the vast majority of the time its right and has got far better in the last 20 years. This is about money, the frozen licence fee, the BBC having to pay for oaps and the govts. agenda of running the Beeb into the ground. BBC3 is going, now the weather, people will really regret this down the line when its too late and we've got is channels showing repeats of rubbish and imports.
