In fairness, it's not possible on Sky either. It's currently included in the hd pack, but I'm sure Muppetman said that's due to change as well.

This is blatant spam from a Sky rep.

Re: Sky sports f1

sky sports F1 is ow offered by SKY as as a standalone channel (£5 per month for the first 6 months and £10.25 per month after that) its still also included in the SKY SPORTS and SKY HD packs at no extra cost (according to the sky F1 website).

I am dissapointed that VM can't offer the SSF1 channel as a standalone as I don't watch many other sports other than motorsports and I can get my fix on other channels but not having live F1 WITHOUT BEING FORCED TO BUY A SS PACK is really poor.

hopefully now sky have gone standalone they will allow VM to do the same sometime soon. if not I will need to seriously look at leaving VM for sky as 2 seasons is long enough having to hide from all news until the BBC eventually show their highlights half a day after the live event.

Really! F1 HD has been available as part of the HD pack without Sports since the start on Sky (that's what the £10.25 charge is for, it's clearly stated as " for Sky TV with HD" on the F1 page.). If they will not offer the HD version to Virgin, you won't get a standalone option.

That's the problem there is lots of people out there who are willing to pay for SSF1 standard def but its just sky who keep it locked up.
This proves even more the deal was done with the BBC and SKY without the interest of viewer and each side only protecting themselves. I couldn't see FOM and Bearnie Ecclestone wanting to lock out any potential viewers by not having a standalone option to view, that was the whole reason F1 was free to air even when most sports were locked behind Sky's paywall, because F1 thrives on maximum exposure due to its heavy reliance on sponsors and when viewing figures are higher for a highlights show on BBC rather than tuning in live there is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

I did say it was only a matter of time before Bernie Ecclsestone got frustrated with Sky's limited customer reach and started procedures to get F1 live into more homes for free.

Lest hope sky see this and get it on VM without the need for a sky box regardless of it being free or not.

It is an interesting idea. Maybe if Ecclestone covers 50% of the cost to provide people with the "free" SKY equiptment it'll get off the ground quicker. F1 want more viewers, SKY want more customers, a 50/50 split would be a great compromise.

The thing is the infrastructure is almost already in place. Everyone has the availability to purchase a freeview box and VM, BT and sky etc supply set top boxes on a subscription base all that needs to happen is that sky make SSF1 SD a free to air channel and keep the HD version as subscription only then the problem is solved. Doing this saves all the extra expense of having to supply every household with a dedicated SSF1 box.

The point I was trying to make is that Ecclestone knew well in adavnce the risks of selling the rights to SKY.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/formul...ling-f1-179665

"The Formula 1 ringmaster said taking the championship off main stream television and onto pay-per-view would ruin the teams’ ability to attract sponsorship because of the size of its audience. “Sky is doing an incredible job but if you look at their audience figures they are nowhere. With these figures it would be almost impossible for teams to find sponsors. That would be suicidal."

It's not like the SKY / BBC deal was the only one on the table.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...estrial-147213

"FORMULA 1 bosses could have kept Grand Prix racing on terrestrial TV but they *apparently turned down a £45million-a-year bid by Channel 4. Leaked documents show the broadcaster was desperate for the motor racing to remain free to viewers and matched a proposal *by BSkyB."

It's all very well Ecclestone coming out suggesting what SKY should do to boost viewing figures however it's not really his place. It's a case of the tail trying to wag the dog. It's all well he's coming out with the type of quotes F1 fans without SKY want to hear, but what is he planning to do about it? I don't see him offering anything at all towards making sure the content is distributed as wide as possible.

If he was so concerned about the fans missing out, the deal with SKY should never have been agreed.

I can't see that happening. There is plenty of free to air football - if f1 was made available for free I'd grab a limited stb and cancel Sky Sports sub, and I suspect many people would do the same.
