Virgin Media Engineer Role
 

Hi there, first time poster to be gentle ;)


I've been invited to come along for a test for the VM Engineer role on Monday, I heard the test is fairly tough and I'm just wondering if anyone has any examples of questions that could be asked or any tips? :dunce:

I have friend who is a tech - he says they are look for people with great behaviours as they can train you on the technical stuff.

Ok firstly learn to spell or else you will trust the US version of spell check and spell realised as realized. Secondly you will NOT be an engineer, this won't be important to you but trust me it REALLY annoys genuine ENGINEERS. /rant

Seems to me you're a little unlucky Hybrid. We don't normally get utter morons responding to a person's first post. Generally speaking, we're quite friendly here, but bogof has clearly decided he needs to be the exception to the rule. Apologies on behalf of the rest of us :)

My post is harsh but beneficial, firstly he needs to ensure he has good grammar and spelling on his application, secondly he will be a field tech, if he is a qualified engineer he will not enjoy the job he has applied for or the wages it pays. I did it for 8 years!

Service techs can earn a right packet if they are willing to do the work, I have dealt with these techs for a long time and know they are happy due to the amount of money they can earn, Network Engineers are the same they can earn loads (thats who i deal with now).

As for the OP just remember to sell yourself and plus ensure if any customer related question come up all always put the customer first, they are big on the customer experience been brilliant first time.

For you to get near what I once earned you'll be working 60+ hours a week.

They can only earn high if they fit a lot of jobs in per day. To do installs correctly and leave with everything set up perfectly and a clean tidy install means you sacrifice wages. IMO. Just to earn the national average wage of £26'500 a year you have to half kill yourself.

A friend of mine tells me its different now, they earn a basic salary and bonuses based on quality metrics along with £10 for every NPS 9 or 10 they get. As the other poster said they earn a very good salary and from what I can gather have a very high employee engagment score.

Really? I still drink wih a few I've known right back to when we were at telewest together an that's not what I'm being told. But like you say you're earning much more than £26500 an I'm being told just to get to £26500 is very very hard.

I left and went straight into a £38000 with BT an I'm still in the industry, VM is known for low pay and not exactly "skilled" workers. We've chatted to guys in cafes or out on the job who have no experience and have only had a few weeks training.

Most of them seem to be highly trained in fitting FPA's an that's about it.

Time moves on though, how long ago did you leave as according to this site a field service technician can earn 14k (I assume thats an apprentice salary) to 38K, so seems like the previous poster is telling the truth and why wouldn't he?

The report also states that VM pay 3% below market rates and BT 5% below. The Network Engineer scale in BT is 20K to 59K so perhaps you are paid based on your skills?
