Intermitent browsing issue

Afternoon All,

Wondering if anyone can help me.

Since yesterday morning I have noticed my 50MB internet connection acting a little odd.

General browsing activity is very slow but it is very intermittent. Websites / clicked links can take a long long time to go anywhere.
I have also noticed that uploading files is very slow.

I have run speed and ping tests and both came back fine.
I am running a continued ping –t test to various sites and notice the odd time out but nothing major perhaps 1 in 15 are timeouts.

I would of ignored it but browsing the web is kinda useful J

My VOIP phone also seems to be affected
Skype is fine
Iphone /ipad /laptop /pc all have same issue when browsing
Nothing has changed software wise
Tried 2 different routers
Tried connecting direct to modem via PC.

In short whatever browse I try just seems to hang there thinking about it and then maybe displays half a page as if it can’t load the rest yet sometimes it will be fine.

The upload is the odd bit - my upload speed doing a speedtest is fine (around 4.80) yet sending a file via skype or ftp is very slow nearly 7 hours for a 20mb file also i just noticed my email outbox full of emails i thought i had sent. Something is going on here
Any ideas?

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

This is exact same issue i am having with the websites and ever since the 8th of sept when modem went offline and im certain virgin was messing around with network.

Ever since also im getting odd increases of latency and if i reboot modem the latency issue vanishes and i also get this on my modem log now almost every day..

Lost MDD Timeout;CM-MAC=;CMTS-MAC=;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;

did you contact virgin about it? i did - very hard to get anywhere when all they say is "everything is fine with the modem"
i've used virgin BB since the day it came out in my area probably 11 years ago now, i know a fault when i see one :)

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

ever since they messed about with peer to peer traffic the whole network has been a complete and utter shambles, can't stream videos from youtube, online gaming pings hitting a all time high.

honestly paying full whack for a substandard service is a joke, they should be paying us to use their god awful service.

btw thats me being polite about vm

:)

Small world.

Ok spent more time with virgin didnt get anywhere they said it was my wireless i explained only my iphone/ipad are connected via the wireless i have tried everything i can think of and im happy its not my fault.

They connected to me using logmein and had a look i showed them web pages not loading or half loading.

They then said use a proxy and made me enter in webcache.virginmedia.com on port 8080
This did make web browsing usable - it really was unusable beforehand.
Web pages now loaded in 7-10 seconds instead of not at all.

The virgin tech said ok happy to help bye.
i said WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO what the hell are you on about?
my web browsing is now usable but super slow.
This change is for my PC i am not going to use that proxy on every other device i own or that anyone else brings round my house the problem is outside my local network and on your side.

I said waiting 7-10 seconds for a web page to load is not fixed by any means. I use my connection everyday from 9-23:00 on and off so know what browsing should be like.

I said look - you will have others phone you up just escalate the issue and save everyone time.
He said no.
i said fine i will call back in the morning and get even more grumpy with you.

Fred i PM'd ya perhaps we can exchange notes to get this fixed.

Oh and on top of that the remote session he had with me was funny - he clicked things and nothing happened then 30 seconds later lots of stuff happened all at once thsi kept happening. I said i told you my connection is playing up ;)

ping / traces etc all seem ok apart from the odd ping timeout maybe every 10-15 attempts.

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

this morning web browsing is worse and it seems getting my emails via outlook is taking forever. I have never seen outlook take 30 mins to update the inbox before even the smallest of emails appears.
One odd thing i have noticed is i can pretty much always search google - clicking a link from a search result does not work but google always seems to work.

any ideas how i can approach virgin?
below are 2 sample tracerts that just show 1-2 timeouts

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

perhaps unrelated but my tivo box is slow this morning.
even playing back a show on the local hard drive takes ages and often bugs out - for example click my shows (takes 1-2 mins) select a show (takes 1-2 mins) then find the folder is empty (its not)
go back (1-2 mins) go back in (1-2 mins) shows are there - click play - takes awhile to start playing

went as far as borrowing a friends laptop.
connected directly to my modem
still have same issue

also found this in my event log in the modem - not sure it means much.

ping -n 50 often returns 6-10% packet loss.

I am in bracknell RG12 too.
Exact same problem.
Been using Virgin 10mb for almost two years with no problems at all.
Since yesterday morning web browser is almost unusable.
it's taken me 30 minutes just to post this reply.
Something is seriously wrong.

Re: Intermitent browsing issue

Yep. That's about the size of it.
Just randomly pages will not load or only partially load.
You seem to be getting a better success rate than me though.
