The plans, which have been subject to intense speculation for months, were accidentally leaked yesterday when the ISP started updating terms and conditions published on many of its web pages.

Under the heading “The Legal Stuff”, in a section explaining which customers can get a free Superhub router, comes the giveaway text: “Free Virgin Media Superhub for XL and XXL: Available to all new Broadband customers taking our Size: XL, Size: XXL and Size:100 Broadband services, and to existing customers upgrading to 30Mb, 50Mb and 100Mb broadband (subject to status and credit checks).”

An insider yesterday confirmed that Virgin Media’s new service tier will replace the 20Mb offering and will come with a 3Mb upload speed. It has been in the planning for some time, he added.

He declined to give a launch date, although several other sources have suggested an official announcement may come within a week.

so they get upgrade to 30mg and faster upload speds than 50mg when e stuck on 1.5mg uploads.

You maybe only get it if you have a superhub how can this be right ?

That'd be why they've been giving superhubs to 20mb users.

Wonder if the STM limits will change and if so, what to.

Yes, that's a link to our own news item on the subject, posted as an exclusive at the weekend. ;)

There have already been a couple of references to it in another thread on here.

What will happen to existing customers with no superhub surely you cant advertise a service as 30 meg if part of the XL customers cant benefit from it.

You would have to ask Virgin Media about that - although they won't tell you. They haven't announced this yet; they simply let it slip by prematurely updating some of their T&Cs last week.

re: 20 Mb/s to 30Mb/s free upgrade

The normal modems can handle 30Mb so even if you don't have a superhub you will still be able to get the 30Mb downstream.

It's a FREE upgrade. Quit complaining. Existing customers without a superhub are already getting one free upgrade, now some of them are going to get another.

You signed up for 20meg, the expectation that you are somehow entitled to get more than you pay for, for free, twice, is ludicrous.

As for needing a Superhub, until VM announce when and how exactly the upgrade will be offered, and to whom, it's all just speculation. I could say you need an upside down tree and voodoo potion to get 30mb, that wouldn't make it so.

It's not about what the modems can handle BBK.

Think the Ambit256 managed 38meg down or something like that when people hacked the 50meg onto it.
