Cat Poisoning

11 cats confirmed as dead from antifreeze poisoning in our small patch over the past week or so.

Our neighbour rushed a cat he found in the street outside, rear end paralysed, to the local vet. Cat dead this morning.

And his own beloved cat is now with the vet... blood test off the scale for antifreeze.

He's gutted... and really, really angry. Her litter is till unweaned, so they have to tested as well before going for fostering.

The vet, the RSPCA and several owners have all been contacting the local media. Owners are scouring streets and gardens for sources of antifreeze and more possible bodies.

One of our cats is out there somewhere and the missus is beside herself with worry.

Would this have happened if the media had shut up about this easy way to kill cats?

I'm probably thinking the same as you Maggy, I find animal cruelty the worst possible crime, how can PEOPLE do this to an animal? or any other animal.

Hope the cat turns up Taf, if someone has done this deliberately then, well words fail me. Our cat was very very ill last year and ended up having to go to The Liverpool vet university for treatment which cost just shy of £2500 (good job we where insured).
The actual cause was never found out but i suspect some kind of poisoning as he wasn`t eating, and for our Barney who weighs nearly 20lb but isn`t that fat to not eat means somethings wrong. Anyway he did sustain some liver damage but the vet explained cats are very good at repairing their liver (unlike us) so with time it should get better.

Good Luck+ i hope they find the male reproductive organs that did this and they get a good kicking!

the human liver regenerates very well actually as long as you do not get it diseased or poisoned with something like paracetamol. you can even partially donate the right lobe which consists of 55 to 70% of the liver and it will regenerate approaching 100% in 4 to 6 weeks and soon after will be back to full size

I've been trying to compose a post but nothing I can say comes anyway near expressing how I feel after reading Taf's post. We call humans who do despicable things 'Animals' but no animal deserves to be put on a par with the slime that would do something like this.

Agreed. If this happened to my cats, The person who did it would not be safe from a return favor i can assure you.

To Taf

hope your cat turns up well .

Maybe something could be added to antifreeze to deter cats if this gets too out of hand. This may have been accidental by the way, some innocent person with a leaking radiator perhaps. It take 2-3 teaspoons to kill a dog and less for a cat.

A lot these days have a bittering agent added to put off would be drinkers.
Don't know if it's a legal requirement though.

Sorry Frankie, i have to disagree with you there, I find cruelty to children the worst possible crime. I don`t like cats but to do anything to harm an animal is despicable.:(

I think there's a Propolyne version that is bittered...

Our cat (actually another of next doors' who adopted us) wandered in after tea... wanting food as usual. We'll keep her in as much as we can.

The kittens have been given the all clear, but their mother is still on a drip trying to flush out the poison.

The streets around here have been buzzing with concerned people out on the pavements... and accusations have been whispered in most of the groups.
