New GFX Card

Hi,

I'm looking for a new gfx card, but I'm a few generations behind, currently on a GeForce 8800GTS 640mb, could I get some advice please on what to look at, my budget is £200 or (ideally much) less please.

Ati 5830 :) if you want to spend less go for the 5770

All the 5850s seem to be about £250, this seem good to you, my current card is an XFX and it's been sturdy

I edited my post down due to budget :)

the 5770 perform on par with the 4870 (which I have and plays everything) and of course has DX11

Wait till next month as nvidia release there new cards at the end of the month so see how they compare then make your choice, but of the ati cards I would go for a 5850 or 5870 for the extra performance over current dx10 cards.

Well I know that if they are released this month then dependant on how they perform I am either going for 2 of them or 2 of the 5870's.

I know Nividia were touting March for release last year but last thing I read ( not really been looking though) Nividia were having trouble with the process and were having a lot failing. Have you got links to new articles with release date?

Fermi on paper looks very impressive and will be great cards but one things for sure those worth owning wont be cheap.

Damien are you still outputting to that 768:1368 tv? you could buy a proper HD tv for the price of your second card I am sure lol

When I built my brother in laws pc I got the vapourx 5770 for him and they are good cards he can play all games and do Photoshop etc so he is happy with it.

Zing
I am still outputting at the low res of 1366x768 for now but with my new job I will, be able to go out and buy them at the end of this month and then a new tv at the end of next month which, will either 40 or 42 inch and full HD which I cannot wait for. :D :D

I have been keeping an eager eye on the net about nvidia's cards (checking each day), and according to everywhere I have seen nvidia are releasing them on the 26th of this month under the names gtx470/480, but according to sites they mainly outperform the ati cards when heavy tesselation is involved.

Re: New GFX Card

I fully expect them to out perform ATI make no mistake. I doubt they will be affordable for me anyway. I will stick with my 4870 till the games push it enough to merrit the upgrade and cost involved

Do you not think it would be wise to at least wait for the drivers to mature a little? and to allow the card to settle into the market?

Is that card a good enough upgrade from a 8800gt (OC) with a screen res of 1680x1050. Just asking as some games now are getting slightly choppy at this res, so I'm also on the look out. The rest of my rig is fine, 8gb ram, Q9550, the usuals etc.

another point dude and I think its a valid one . Do you not think it a wise move to actually buy the TV first. So you have the screen with the resolution then if 1 gfx works at max then you have saved hundreds of pounds?
