Website still up 7 years after leaving NTL (now Virgin)

I've made numorous long calls to Virgin Media (30 - 45 mins) and have written to customer services but I can't get our web site taken down - we left in NTL in 2002 and thought it would just get taken down when the account was closed .

The site is still up however. It's a business site done as a favour for a relative and I'm getting it in the neck as it's still online.

One tech guy told me that it is still on the old sabs system and wasn't converted over, and that he would put in a request to get it deleted. Usually however, I'm told that as the account details can't be found that even though it's obvious that the orphan site is still there, nothing can be done without a valid account ref.

Writing to customer services has resulted in complete silence.

Where do I go from here? Any help would be very appreciated.

Do you own the copyright to this site?
You could always try sending them a cease and desist letter to their abuse address :/

If it is a webspace site then you do not own the copyright to it.

I think that only applies in relation to things like any forums and chat rooms

EDIT: Even it does apply to the webspace, all that says is VM are allowed to copy it. It doesn't say the user gives up the copyright.

This is the terms from the Virgin National terms:

Freespace:Information and material published on the webspace (Freespace) area of the www.virginmedia.com site owned by you shall remain owned by you. However, you hereby grant to Virgin Media a royalty-free, irrevocable licence to copy and distribute such information and material solely to the extent necessary to allow Virgin Media to make the same available via the Service. For the avoidance of doubt, this licence does not transfer ownership of the whole or any part of such information or material or any copyright, idea, concept, know-how or technique contained in the same.

How does this help? The response I get by phone generally along the lines of nothing can be done simply because it's outside the normal run of the mill of tech support issues. Even the only guy who was interested in sorting it out had to put a request in for further action. That was months ago and that request obviously didn't get through.

if you can remember the username & password, someone on an ex NTL connection, may be able to take it down for you.

It was the other half's account. He can remember the login but isn't sure of the password. :-/

Maybe you could contact one of the Mods on here? They might be able to escalate this to one of their contacts within VM?

Just send a PM to one of the Mods and ask if they can help... advise them of this thread.

I don't know if they can do anything, but might be worth a shot? HTH :)

Ok I'm probably being a bit dense - by Mods do you mean anyone with "Virgin Media Staff" under their name, or are they denoted another way?

(Also, doesn't one of the stickies say no PMs asking for support? I don't want to get told off ...)

You can contact a moderator (not VM staff) at any time.... They may or may not be able to help, but it's worth a shot. You won't get in to trouble... the worst would be that they are unable to pass your details on to VM. HTH

Or, send a message to VM's security team, go to www.virginmedia.com/netreport.
