Just seen this on the BBC.
RIP, may we never have to see the horrors that you have seen. |
re: The last one :( - RIP to all who fought in the Great War
Harry may you rest in peace.
The last of a generation that gave so much to remove an evil from this world. The torch has now passed to those who even today put there lives on the line for you and me. |

Not sure if Frank Buckles and Jack Babcock is still alive who are the last American & Canadian WW1 vets. No French, German, NZ or Italian left.
Anyone know if Claude Choules (born in the UK) is still alive or what country he fought for? ---------- Post added at 12:57 ---------- Previous post was at 12:53 ---------- Claude Choules (108) confirmed as still alive, fought for Britain and now an Aussie. Frank Buckles (108) also confirmed still living in Virginia USA Jack Babcock is still alive in Canada and celebrated his 109th Birthday on the 23rd of this month. I think they're the last now ---------- Post added at 12:57 ---------- Previous post was at 12:57 ---------- Just found a wiki page dedicated to the last http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...of_World_War_I |

I can hardly believe this!!! I was just watching on "yesterday" the last tommy which was filmed in 2004, and then there was eight British "tommy" WW1 survivors.
The program showed Harry returning to the battlefields of Passchendale for the first time in nearly ninety years, and as the program ended there was only two left. RIP Harry, in the end you truly were the last tommy atkins. Quote:
Claude wasn't mentioned as the program finished as one who had died since filming, but this was 2004. |

Remembrance Day will seem all the more poignant now that both Henry and Harry are both gone.
RIP Mr Patch. |
re: The last one :( - RIP to all who fought in the Great War
Yes, as is all too often the case with great cricketing partnerships, when one centurian gets out the other often follows shortly thereafter. First Henry now Harry - God bless them both!!
Let's not forget, however, all the other heroes from previous conflicts who may not be as old but also suffered (and still are suffering) horrendously in the name of freedom and haven't enjoyed the same media coverage or assistance. IMHO donating a few pounds and/or some time to charities like the Royal British Legion, The Army Benevolent Fund, Help for Heroes, SSAFA etc. is one of the best ways to show genuine appreciation for people like Henry and Harry. |

I watched this on News at Ten, and was kind of wondering why they gave the main spot to Ronnie Biggs? IMO, Harry Patch should have taken that spot.

re: The last one :( - RIP to all who fought in the Great War
I watched somthing on BBC2 last night, him and his mates went through hell on their way to fight the Germans, then they had to fight when they got there.
I was also shocked when the news came on and the top billing went to Ronnie Biggs. This country is upside down. |
re: The last one :( - RIP to all who fought in the Great War
RIP Harry, the most telling thing he said was that after millions of people had laid their lives down the politicians sat around the table, just shows the useless and spineless politicians we have, the last bit is from me, although I am sure he probably felt the same.
