stats seem ok for 50mbit ?
 

Hi all,
right i have been having some issues since last wednesday roughly:(
Been having very poor download speeds, very slow broswing of websites, including virginmedia.com and some times it is that bad it gets to a point where you think you will get a connection time out, and lastly i have been getting disconnect a few times also.

Since i have been connected i have been using the netgear router and only until the last 40mins i have just gone back to the virginmedia modem to see if sorts everything out, but i still get very poor download speeds and browsing.

Here is a bit of info if this helps? just need some advice please

just done a speedtest and i i have nothing else using my internet connection and also it took ages to finish the speedtest.

Signal and power levels would help at this stage, as that upload is god-awful, even for Virgin!

They look odd, but I don't know whether they're right for 50Mbit. Somebody who knows would do well to comment. :)

What would be of help is the "Downstream Power Level", "Upstream Power Level", and "Downstream SNR", as they can be key to a good connection.

Your downstream power level is a little on the high side, but it *might* be alright, depends if you're in an ex-NTL or ex-Telewest area. The frequencies at which your downstream and upstream are locked onto are a bit weird though.

I take it you've rebooted the modem (switched it off, waited a few minutes, switched it back on) and router if you have one?

yeah i turned off the router and modem, then connected the modem to the PC, both the modem and router was turnd off for roughtly 20mins .
I only have the modem now connected and it has been on all night.
Shall i turn of the modem again for say 30mins and see how it goes and then post some stats ?

All the power levels are fine, the T3 / T4 timeouts are not. T3 usually indicates upstream issues, T4 tends to indicate downstream but could also be caused by the same upstream issues causing the T3s. That the upstream speed is so rubbish also goes along with this, suggests problems on the upstream network which need to be attended to by Virgin.

Turkey - regardless of ex-ntl or ex-Telewest received power levels are the same tolerance, it's the same modem that has to decode the signal. MERs are fine on all downstreams.

Also just FYI the OP is ex-ntl, 298.75MHz etc are IRC offset frequency plan which is ex-ntl. Telewest use HRC, 299MHz etc. Upstream can be pretty much anything in a range of 6.6 - 63.8MHz depending on network and noise, and won't be an exact Hz number on modems that report it properly, which some don't they just go to 1 decimal place :)

That may well confuse some operators :)

Tell them it's very slow, especially upstream, then mention that you have the T3 timeout indicator counting up. Hopefully the person on the other end will think to check the signals going from your modem to Virgin.

I would bet you've a ton of packet loss as well.

but i will mention what you have said Broadbandings though.

since i will be at work from 7.30am tomorrow and then getting back home about 6pm, would it matter i will not be at home if i ring up? or is it best being at home when i do ring up ?.

Just wondering, have you checked speed and duplex settings to the modem, and how are you connecting to it, directly or via router?

Might be good to eliminate CPE as a cause, if you've a duplex mismatch between modem and router / PC that might slow your upstream down a ton and cause downstream to have problems.

i have only got the virgin media modem connected to my pc, i have now complety disconnected the netgear router.
Regarding the duplex settings, how do i check this, as this stuff is all new to me lol

Other option is to ask on the newsgroups support - they have 2nd line, which'll be better than the muppets in India. :)
