New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
Still trying to sort out my 20MB -> 50MB increase but that is another story.
However, have installed the new WNR2000 router. When direct ethernet from laptop to modem getting speeds of aorund 10 - 15MB. When via the router only getting around 600K! Upload speeds are constant for both around 1MB. Nothing else is using the router and even disabled wireless. Anybody any ideas? ---------- Post added at 17:14 ---------- Previous post was at 16:55 ---------- Just replugged in my old Linksys router and getting about 8MB so suggests settings are wrong with N router or is faulty? ---------- Post added at 17:39 ---------- Previous post was at 17:14 ---------- I'll get bored soon but this may have something to do with IP addresses. When plugged direct to modem or via old Linksys IP one thing and speed OK but when with Netgear is something else but lower. xx.xx.yyy.zzz (yyy and zzz different). Any help appreciated but going back to my Linksys for the moment I think. |
Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds - Now on second!
I have received a replacement router from Netgear and still having problems. I don't want to call them again without an idea - can anybody suggest anything.
Plug laptop direct to modem - get 50mb/s Use my old Linksys router - get 40mb/s+ (wired via cat5e) Use the 2nd Netgear N and get 1 mb/s (same as one I have sent back) I've even used their supplied cables (I have 2 set now!) in both ends and still no improvement. Firmware is latest version. |
Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
my advise would be to call netgear ,but before you do you could try changing the channel on the router or changing the security setting first(thats what netgear will do) also you could try connecting your laptop to the router with a cable and see what speed you get (incase it's your adapter)

Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
This is all via CAT5e cable. Not even tried wireless yet on Netgear!

Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
how are you measuring your speed
|
Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
Using SpeedTest but also checked via file downloads.

Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
Have you checked the router to see if there is a QoS on there that is hampering the speed?
|
Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
Update on this - nothing in QoS so have called Netgear support again. The normal tweaking of setting and checking firmware but nothing. It is being escalated again but just hope don't want me to send this router back as well - I feel it maybe pointless!
Is anybody getting good speeds using a router apart from the Netgear one? I get 30-40 Mbps on my 3 year old Linksys one. |
Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
I'm moving from a 20mb service to 50mb on Thursday, I have asked them to use my old router at the moment until I can unpack the new router WNR2000 and set it up correctly on my network (with the correct IP address or each machine, etc.). Once I have the router I may be able to shed some light on it in the mean time, have you check the router logs to see if there are any errors?

Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
Maybe try new ethernet cable cat6 rather than cat5e
|
Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
Thanks for comments and thoughts. Not sure the change of cables will make a difference (have swapped them between cat5 and 5e) but may give it a try.
There is something in the logs but don't really understand if an issue or not - any comments appreciated. Netgear Logs [DoS Attack: IP Spoofing] from source: 192.168.1.20, port 15095, Tuesday, April 14,2009 20:51:27 [admin login] from source 192.168.1.100, Tuesday, April 14,2009 20:47:21 [DoS Attack: IP Spoofing] from source: 192.168.1.20, port 15095, Tuesday, April 14,2009 20:47:19 [DHCP IP: 192.168.1.100] to MAC address XX, Tuesday, April 14,2009 20:47:07 [DoS Attack: IP Spoofing] from source: 192.168.1.20, port 15095, Tuesday, April 14,2009 20:46:49 [Initialized, firmware version: V1.2.0.8] Tuesday, April 14,2009 20:46:49 However, the IP comments did ring a bell. I get different IP addresses between routers. Netgear seems to be on xx.xx.213.xx and Linksys on xx.xx.219.xx but this may just be because I need to reboot the modem each time. The speed differences are quite dramatic! Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
Blimey cor me, I thought netgear suppose to be really good ? Very shocking myself over Netgear WNR2000 poor speed on 50Mbps. Virgin Media should stop supply netgear and try different router instead.

Re: New Netgear Router & Poor Speeds
netgear have allways been good, do you use anything else wireless in the house that could mess with the signal? tried a different channel on the router?
