London St. George's Day celebration

Quote:

"London Mayor Boris Johnson is to defy the politically correct brigade by staging a week-long festival in the capital to celebrate St George’s Day, with the red and white cross of England’s patron saint flying proudly from his City Hall offices."

The London celebrations include:

* Trafalgar Square event on the theme of English food
* Shakespeare’s Birthday celebrations at the Globe
* the Festival of St George at Covent Garden
* a march past and wreath laying parade at the Cenotaph

Trafalgar Square will next month play host to a day of free events to mark St George’s Day which will include traders from famous Borough market for ‘Food Glorious Food’ with the square decorated to suggest the atmosphere of a traditional English fete.

Organisers promise the square will “be transformed into a food lover’s delight”.

There will also be street theatre performances and cabaret entertainment with a humorous culinary theme andhot and cold food will be served all day interspersed with cooking demonstrations.

The Mayor of London said: “St George’s Day is an opportunity for Londoners and visitors to the capital to celebrate what English culture has given to the world. This year we will be focusing on English food, with a free event in Trafalgar Square that brings traditional English theatre, dance and street performance.”

To mark Shakespeare’s birthday, which coincides with St George’s Day, there will be a series of free events at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Sounds like a good idea. Of course, there will be people all over Edinburgh, Cardiff and Dublin who are wondering why on earth this is considered newsworthy. What a pity that the English have become so coy about their identity that celebrating the national day has the air of controversy about it.

Now, "BBKing approves of Tory scheme..." is worth a headline. :D

It does. It's just that I suffer from a mild case of culinary anglophobia :)

I'm proud to be English and far from coy about the fact. It's our lily-livered, PC obsessed leaders who're responsible for that impression.

The problem with the whole PC thing is the press will highlight a few extreme examples and assert that as a representation of the country as a whole. They will find some minority group who doesn't like this day, or any changes to the plan, and try to make that into another front page 'PC Madness!!!' story.

Ok, "BBKing approves of a scheme by Boris, who coincidentally happens to be a Tory". ;)

About time we celebrated the day, instead of trying to sweep it under the carpet for fear of upsetting 'some'

That's right, because all other towns and cites in Wales, Scotland and Ireland are totally void of people, we only live in those 3 cities don't we.. ;)
