Recording from soundcard

I'm using Cool Edit Pro and I want to copy some audio from video clips. CEP has a built-in feature where you simply press 'record' and whatever is going through your soundcard gets recorded.

Problem is I'm having trouble getting it to do that. My soundcard is onboard (Realtek AC97) and I have a microphone plugged in to it. For some reason CEP records from that so I unplug it and it's still not recording the audio (I'm just getting silence). My webcam has a built-in mic and CEP tries to record from that too.

It's clearly an issue with the default recording device but how do I get it to set the right one? Or rather, which IS the right one?

The options are:

Line In (Realtek AC97 Audio)
Microphone (Webcam Mic)
Phone Line (Realtek AC97 Audio)
Wave Mapper
Microphone (Realtek AC97 Audio)

No idea, but if you're completely stuck, Audacity will do what you want - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I'd prefer to do it myself - I appreciate the offer but there's obviously a problem here and I'd rather solves it than go around it.

I tried each of those settings in audacity and nothing would come through. I've got a feeling it's to do with my Realtek settings, might be an idea to reinstall the software.

I appreciate the offer.

I use Cool Edit pro anyway, it's always worked in the past but that was before I plugged a mic and webcam in.

Reinstalling now anyway.

Re: Recording from soundcard

Fair enough never used cool edit pro maybe you should just unplug mic and webcam in and reboot see it will record then. saves you reinstalling.
