Mouse problems
 

My old mouse appeared to go on the blink (PS/2), so I put new batteries in my cordless mouse and that worked immediately. But I'm not happy with the cordless one, because it's a bit erratic and the scroll wheel doesn't work. I've tried several different mouse(s) including one I bought yesterday, and although they appear in the Device Manager, none of them work. I don't want to disable the cordless one, in case I can't get any of the others to work. Is it not possible to have more than one mouse working at the same time on the same pc? :dozey:

My understanding is you can have a many mice connected as long as you have enough ports to connect them to.

I have definately had 3 connected once and they was all working.

Windows XP and above just deals with them as new hardware.

RubberyDuck, thanks for your reply. When I look in Device Manager it says all the mouse(s) are working properly, which is not the case. Don't know how to resolve this!

There could be some device conflict going on here.

How is the wireless connected? USB or PS2?

Have you tried uninstalling the mouse/s from device manager then rebooting and letting Windows find & configure the thing again?

I also had a wee bit of of a mouse problem last night.
The wife practically hoovered up my only wired mouse,ripping the wire out completely then 10 minutes later the rechargeable batteries died in my current wireless mouse.So i searched the house for my 4 spare rechargeables or indeed any AAA,only to find them all in various kiddie toys,all dead or drained.

Sods Law at it`s very best.

My partner has a cordless mouse and has a complete spare set of batteries for it....but that doesn't stop her raiding the cordless phones everytime she forgets to charge up the old set ;)

PS/2 my god that's an old mouse.

Does the wireless mouse have a dongle? I guess that it is a USB one.

It may be simple to pop to PC World / Comet etc to get a wired optical mouse.

I now have a total of 5 mouse(s) having bought a cheapo one yesterday from Tesco. The only one that is working is Logitech Cordless mouse with a USB 'connecter'? don't know what a dongle is. I have two with PS/2 connectors, one is optical, and also a Tevion laser (I think) mouse rechargeable. I came across this but haven't had the opportunity to study it yet. I am pretty sure I was able to have two mouse working on this computer before. Would it be wise to uninstall the Logitech one, and see if the others would then work? Worried in case I end up with none working.:Yikes:

My mouse is PS2... Mind you it was USB when I bought it but I had to replace the broken lead about 4 years ago.. It's such a good mouse (Microsoft Explorer mouse) that I've never felt the need to replace it...

uninstall all of them whilst plugged in( from DM) turn off pc/ then remove all mice from machine/ reboot pc with no mouse/ as whichever usb mouse you want to work.(basically what I said in pet hates but likely explained better?) You said you had 2 ps2 mice installed? not at the same time? if so how?

Zing another dumb question. Would I be able to turn off the pc if I had uninstalled all the mouse(s) or does the only one that is working, continue to work (even though it's been uninstalled) until shutdown?

I still prefer PS2 mice wherever possible. A couple of my 'toolbox' CDs and the Acronis imaging CD do not reliably recognise USB mice.

I just find USB overall less reliable. The hot plugging facility is nice but there are oddities still with USB. I've several times plugged a printer back into a different USB socket from the original and Windows thinks it's a new device and wants me to install it all over again...

Was a bit dubious about uninstalling the cordless mouse in DM (the only mouse that was working). But the minute I did, the PS/2 mouse worked. Oh the joys of having a properly working mouse. Thanks Zing.

How does the fact that it's got a PS/2 connector make it an old mouse? If it were serial, I'd call THAT old! I just bought a brand new wireless desktop set for my Media Centre PC and that had PS/2 connectors.

So, just a case of uninstall everything that might be related, reboot and let Windows redetect...
