Ethernet connection on Samsung V+ box
 

Hello All. New Forumee so please be gentle.

I have had a new Samsung V+ box installed to replace my faulty box. This new one has an ethernet connection on the rear. There was no paperwork with the new box so I am unsure if I can use this connection and what facilities it would give me.

I do not have the V+ package.

It's disabled. The only service Virgin used to provide via STB Ethernet was broadband and they aren't supplying broadband via STBs for new installs now (your new box would be counted as a new install).

A SAMSUNG V+ box? :/ I thought V+ boxes were only Scientific Atlanta branded?

There were rumours (and even photos IIRC) of a samsung V+ box. Virgin were certainly testing boxes from other suppliers.

But nothing has been confirmed or launched. There is still only one V+ AFAIK

And I thought all cable STBs have an ethernet socket anyway (even the really really old Pace ones)?

And why did the OP get a V+ when he doesn't 'have the V+ package'?

I suspect the OP has a Samsung V (not +) box. Either way, the Ethernet port would still be disabled.

I've wondered about this for a while - does it mean that all cable boxes have two cable modems (one for the return path, used for interactive, etc.)? And for that matter, is the return path standard DOCSIS, and does anyone know what speed that runs at?

Maybe he's on XL, so from his point of view isn't really taking V+.

Another thing actually, is it possible to get a V+ box without taking the V+ service (or being on XL)? Will it show HD content, will it even function at all?

They have one modem, but with two interfaces and two IP addresses. One for broadband and one for interactive. STBs use DOCSIS, except for Pace boxes on the Langley network which use DAVIC. The DOCSIS profile for interactive is typically 256K down / 192K up.

Yes, it can be downgraded to behave like a standard box, with no PVR functions and no HD.

I feel privileged to be replied to by such an esteemed poster as yourself :-D.

So why is interactive so damned slow? It feels slower than my old Netgem i-Player, with a 56Kbit modem and less processing power.

No HD? Meaning that even BBC HD is unavailable without a V+ sub? I'm surprised that's allowed...

You still get BBC HD, you just can't record it. The V+ fee is for the recording functions.

I guess being the OP I should double check the facts and you are right it is not a v+ box. My Mistake. It is a Samsung SMT2110C.

I've got a V+ HD Samsung STB. I did have a Scientific Atlanta but with a bit of persuasive talk to VM customer services I got the Samsung! It is a hell of a lot quieter, doesn't overheat because of the fan, is alot more well made & doesn't crash. It also looks nicer and is smaller.
This is a V+ HD Box, NOT a V HD Box.;)
