It's just unfair.....
.....that im apparently on 10meg but during the day i've NEVER received over 4.8 download speed, and between 6-11 on an evening i'm lucky to get 2meg... It's hard going to browse sites during peak time, and IMO it should not be hard loading pages when i'm paying for 10mb...
I don't even download anything, or if i do it's rare. I was upgraded without even knowing, when i was on 4mb my speed was consistently 4mb no matter what time of day it was... Why do i have to pay the same as someone who is getting the full speed? I'm not even getting half! |

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem. The should be a sticker on the bottom saying what model. Open a browser and in the address bar put or click the link > http://192.168.100.1/ the password and username are both root if required. What I want you to post is the Downstream power levels including the SNR and the Upstream power levels for me thanks. DO NOT POST YOUR MAC ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Re: It's just unfair.....
are you using a router or connected directly to the modem?
|
Re: It's just unfair.....
I'm using a router, Netgear... The speed is the same with or without it though

Re: It's just unfair.....
Vote with your feet. Get a proper ISP. Sorry - not a lot I can say. VM are full of BS. End of. All talk, no action.

Re: It's just unfair.....
Pia, assuming you're running XP, try running TCPoptimizer It tweaks some windows settings. It may not make any difference, but it can occasionally make a massive difference. Obviously, it won't solve congestion issues, but it may improve your daytime speeds.

Re: It's just unfair.....
If you don't use 4Mb then downgrade as just for browsing 2Mb is more than fine and then you at least save yourself £7 a month

That's just one example of course, i experience this across all websites. I was on 4mb and didn't even know i'd been upgraded until i realised how much slower it was and was browsing CF and it crossed my mind it could be traffic shaping so i checked the max speed... So in short, you're right i should probably downgrade back to 4mb (if that's even possible now?) but it's not right that i shouold downgrade to get more speed.:td: |
Re: It's just unfair.....
Your on a fairly new part of the network that was set-up by comcast quite late in the cable market so should be in good nick. Ntl Teesside where pretty good at what they did. I did leave there over 5 years ago and I'm fairly certain that not a great deal of investment in the network has happened since.
Shame really because you used to have a fairly clued up faults team based in Stockton that would have sorted things out for you before everything was outsourced. |
Re: It's just unfair.....
There were lots of well trained staff about NTL and blueyonder but bean counters took charge and network care took a back place. I had similar problems on my 4meg package so downgraded to two might aswell since i had less than 512k at peak. Moved to ADSL and seem to have steady 5meg any time and if the central I am on does get congested I can drop PPP and change central to one less busy. Was the best mover I have ever done. According to BT when I moved back to them my line should have been no more than 3.5 meg yet I get a good 6400kbps sync or higher. What I cannot stress more is you need a good quality router and filter faceplate at master socket... I left VM due to constant changing date for them upgrading the UBR plus regular internet denied and phorm was the last straw...
