Can a Sony DVD player with Div X play AVI files?
Hey people,
My friend has a Sony DVD player with Div X sticker on the front, I have a couple of films in AVI format he wants them, can I burn them both to a DVD and would they play? Thanks ;) |
Re: Can a Sony DVD player with Div X play AVI files?
AVI is a generic file extension, divx, xvid annd a lot of other encodings can be labeled as AVI.
A player that is DIVX certified should play divx 3/4/5/6 and some versions of xvid. Get Gspot (google it) and that'll tell you what the codecs are on an avi file, try burning them and playing them, it'll be trial and error to find out which ones play and a simple matter of using DIVX convertor or DRDivx to reencode them into a certified divx format ;) |
Re: Can a Sony DVD player with Div X play AVI files?
Thanks!
Are there different types of AVI file then? Do you think they would probably play? |

Gspot as I've already mentioned (it's a free app just google it) will tell you the codec, but in the end it depends on the player, so simply try it, if it plays great, if not then another free app is DrDivx (you'll need to install a codec pack as well) will re-encode them to a standard that any Divx player will play them

Re: Can a Sony DVD player with Div X play AVI files?
as i mentioned in a nother similar thread:
i don't know if it's still an issue, but I know few year sago, if they had been encoded "Packed bitstream" they would play back jerky on some files. but if you used mpeg modifier http://moitah.net/ on the file (on your pc0 it would convert it to non packed bitstream so would play on my divx/xvid standalone players without problem. my divx player is cheap ~£30 from lidl a few years ago, and it does a great job. my sister in law has a LG DVD/hard drive recorder and she says that plays divx xvid files fine to. |
Re: Can a Sony DVD player with Div X play AVI files?
Its a Sony RDR-HXD860
Maybe im being thick but do I have to convert the AVI file into something else? When you say codec ? |
Re: Can a Sony DVD player with Div X play AVI files?
I'll suggest it one more time, try burning the AVI file to a DVD and see if it works..
If not then install the divx codec (klite/megaXP or another pack), install DrDivx and re-encode (it'll give you a *.divx file that you might need to rename back to *.avi for some players ;) :p: |

With an hardware device, such as a dvd player, the different encoding of various files is more easily 'flagged' by the file extension - so a dvd file will tend to be vob, rather than mpeg, for example. - for files with an avi extension the player will only cope if it has the appropriate decoder (codec) built in to match the format the actual file is encoded with, such as divx |
