What you won't read in the Mail, Express and Sun tomorrow

The hundreds of thousands of eastern European migrants who have moved to Britain in the past two years have been allocated only 1% of council or housing association flats, contrary to popular perception, research revealed today.

A paper for a meeting of the government's migration impacts forum said around 90% of those who arrived in the last two years - the biggest wave of immigration in Britain's recent history - are crowded into the bottom end of the private rented sector, often in poor conditions.

The report, by Joanne Roney of Sheffield City council, said some migrant workers, especially those who have only come for a short period, often accept poor housing conditions because they are on very low pay levels or need to send money home.

In other words, we're exploiting them. Not the other way round, they're not sponging off the British taxpayer, they're not being given preference in flats over ordinarydecentwhiteworkingclass Britons, they're putting up with poor housing, paying British landlords for the privilege and working hard in low paid jobs.

Can we now give the petty small-minded xenophobia some bloody rest please?*

* No, in all probability. But it's worth asking.

And as is the norm in the other type of threads....

"You don't believe everything you read in the Guardian do you??" :D

Well I live in an area full of eastern europeans now and not one lives in a council or HA property, they are all in private rentals (most very nice new builds). I suspect the property crash we keep hearing about is being held at bay by the number of foreign nationals.

It's not an opinion piece but a piece of reportage. If and when I find the original report I'll post a link to that under the rule of 'always read the original documents'. Generally if you do this with the Mail or Express you'll find they inverted the meaning, so it's always important to read the original (the tabs will either ignore large sections or find some sentence they can distort to show that We're Being Invaded By Foreigners Who Will Take Our Jobs And Homes While Sponging Off The Taxpayer At The Same Time Because They're So Evil And Foreign). Oh, hang on:

570,000 own their own homes. If they all sold up to nice British people we'd get 'HOUSE PRICE CRASH' headlines, presumably.

So the true figure of homes taken by those allowed into the country under Government immigration policy will be even higher.

'Figure for foreigners doesn't include British people shock'. Fancy that. Nice to know the Mail doesn't consider you properly British even if you've got British citizenship (like my Dad, for instance). Nasty, small minded paper.

I suspect the price of private flat rentals might be being kept up by it, too, so 'BRITISH LANDLORDS CHEER MIGRANT CASH BONANZA' would be another possible Mail headline. In a completely bizarre inverted world, of course.

Oy. Do you want to tell the thick Nazis that the Express is owned by a Jew, or shall I?

That'll only be possible when our shambolic government (you know the one which forecast half a dozen Polish plumbers would turn up here after the EU doors opened) comes out of its denial stage, gets to grips with reality and proves itself able to gather and collate accurate, reliable immigration and related information. Although sadly I won't be holding my breath on that one, I do have a vested interest since being married to a wonderful E. European, the last thing I want is everyone from that part of the world being labelled a scrounger.

Oh and by the way, the people who need to be convinced about all this are not Guardian reading Liberal do gooders but all those decent folk at the sharp end of things who struggle to survive and rightly or wrongly perceive they're being treated unfairly.

Hardly a xenophobe - by 'decent folk at the sharp end of things' I mean those who aren't scroungers just seeking to blame foreigners for their ills.

And what type of person would you class as a scrounger?

People who refuse to work when they could and who'd rather claim benefits would be one example.

Yes i have to admit i am quite interested in your definition of "scrounger". Also without a link to something not connected with the media i will treat this the same way as i treat all media articles. Ah i see well according to the government no one refuses to work anymore or they lose their benefits.

I'd say my definition of 'scroungers' tallies pretty well the the dictionary definition of the term.

You'd be surprised how many people classify me as a scrounger. If you hear it often enough you start to believe it too.

Well not knowing you I wouldn't know why that might be, but as the parent of a disabled child who's married to a foreigner I come across quite a few bigoted idiots. C'est la vie I'm afraid..... :(
