Sat-Nav Advice
 

My Mum and Uncle want to get my Dad a sat-nav for Christmas because he has absolutely no sense of direction. Below are the things we would like:

• Around £150 (give or take £10/£20)
• 8 character postcode search
• Safety camera alerts

Anything else would be a bonus. I have seen the TomTom One XL for £147 from PixMania, but I haven't a clue if this is a good system.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Tom Tom has the clearest voice out of all of them and my own personal opinion the Tom Tom has the clearest screen and easy to understand.
I like the way it can be set to advise you if your speed creeps up.

I had to install my camera alerts seperately onto my via michilen but some tom tom models have it pre installed so would go for tom tom.

I have used a TomTom for several years and I am very happy with it.

Tom Tom.... Have used loads of other makes but tom tom beat the rest by a mile ATM.

I got a Navman F20.

its cheap and it has camera warnings, problem is you only have either male or female voice, and they are annoying, but you can turn the sound off.

a 2.5" touch screen, full postcode search/street search, UK & Ireland maps
its an ok piece of kit.

I have a tom tom go 510, simple to use, very easy to update and no problems with it.

I've also got a TT510, I subscribe to PocketGPSworld's camera database, and I also subscribe to TT's traffic data via bluetooth from my mobile phone (I do 400 miles a week). Its not perfect, for some reason it doesn't slow down the car automatically when it warns you of a mobile police radar trap :(

I have a 510 and functionally it's great apart from:

The standard mount is crap, nasty and sometimes doesn't make contact properly so you have to make sure the power light is lit when plugged into the charger lead.

If you run the battery low the unit sometimes won't power on unless you reset it which is a fiddly little microswitch you have to push with a pin or something.

You should be able to pick one of these up dirt cheap as they have now been replaced by the 520.

I have a Tom Tom One GB which I got 2 years ago for £199.99, they can now be had (in a newer version) for about £149.99, brilliant bit of kit!

i have a nav-cam from evesham technologies brill sat nav with camera allerts its allso an MP3player and digi photo viewer, i plug it into van stereo and listen to its mp3 and when a voice allert comes on it lowers the music and gives directions it was £99 from asda

I have a TomTom go 910 with 20gig hd. I only have a in car adapter with it and my car has not got a cigarette lighter. So it does nothing right now just sits in my computer room and looks at me gone out:(. It cost me nothing as I got it for pc repair job I did. Not bad for 20mins work:D

Not used it yet as the sat nav is worth more than me car:D

After speaking to a friend who works at PC World we are going to go for the TomTom One XL GB Traffic at £199.99 (OK the budget has gone up but my Mum and Uncle decided to pay a little more lol). We have found it at Amazon for £188 and the bloke (a manager) said he would match a cheaper internet price so we'll do that me thinks.
