Looks like the servers are getting seriously thrashed. I managed to grab the torrent files for both the 32 & 64bit desktop ISOs though, & have put them on my webspace incase anyone else has trouble getting them:
ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso.torrent
ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent

Given how popular Ubuntu seems to be, I was thinking Proud Penguin might be more appropriate. :)

Cool :)

Any major changes, apart from built-in Compiz Fusion?

Have they fixed the issues with it locking up solid every so often and taking ages to boot compared to the last version?

Download manager connect to multiple mirrors to pull the file off maxing my line quite nicely :)

No, still takes a lot longer than the previous version to boot and it locked up twice last night for no reason, they also haven't integrated bcm4xxx wireless firmware yet so it's still a pita getting most wireless PCMCIA cards running.

Does the shagged serverage extend to people upgrading an installation? I might dig out my old *ahem* work laptop, which has Ubuntu on at the moment.

Yep
Power up Ubuntu then
System > Administration > Update Manager

It will tell you
New Distribution '7.10' is available

Just click 'Upgrade' then find something to do for an hour or so.

Last time I used this method it seemed to take forever to upgrade. Maybe it's my PC that's not up to it or maybe my broadband is not broad enough.

Nowadays when I upgrade I download the iso by torrent and wipe the partition and do a clean install.

PS This is where to get the torrent from :- http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/

The download manager [Orbit] I use doesn't seem to have that capability. Managed to get the ISOs I wanted via torrent though. :)

Yes it does, they just didn't make it easy to find ;)

Pause the download (not sure if you have to do this to modify it) then right click on it and click properties, then you should get a dialogue box up, One of the tabs there allows you to add mirrors

I run through the upgrade this morning before work after updating existing stuff the previous night.

Downloaded the 1.3GBs in around 10 mins then froze trying to update libgcc. At lunch I killed the update processes and restarted them. Took a little while to get the version list etc and change repositories, then noted it already had the files and started to upgrade. Now when I get home, if it rebooted I'll be in SuSE 10.2 (I don't use grub/lilo in Kubuntu). Maybe tweak the relevant version of menu.lst and see what happens.

:tu: Thanks, I hadn't noticed that. It seems you could add mirrors even before the download starts as well [click the More button, then the Mirror tab], but if the dialogue had been activated by IE/Maxthon then you'd need to have the list of URLs handy, as it won't let you do anything with the browser window until you've closed that dialogue. That doesn't apply if you manually create a new download in Orbit though.
