Importing Dvds from the US?

If I wanted to import a DVD Box set from the USA costing around $40 does anyone know what i'd have to pay with regards to import duty/tax .etc? :erm:

shipping is around $7 was looking on amazon.com

want heroes series 1 when it comes out and its £42 over here but $40 in the US!

It Being NSTC reigon1 shouldn't cause a problem since we have multireigon dvd players in the house and the TV's are fairly recent and don't seem to have a trouble with accepting as NSTC input via Scart.

Depending on if/how much i'd get stung for import duty its quite a bit cheaper to order it from amazon.com than amazon.co.uk

Not sure how much you'll get stung for import duty, but you will get stung for VAT.

Altough you won't necessarily have to pay anything, not everything that comes from the US is caught by customs, I would say it's around 25 out 100 that you won't have any charges to pay.

I did try looking on the revenue and customs website but it appears the page relating to import duty rates is down for maintenance.

Anyone got a rough idea of the %age rate import duty is on a Dvd?

If you can't wait until it's releasd in the UK, there's always other [questionable] methods of getting ;)

It's what I've done with every series of Lost and BSG. It saves actually making a back-up of 6-7 disks or so when you actually do buy them, and also saves you high shipping costs :/

Over GBP18 may get caught by C&E. You will pay an admin fee to the post office or whoever is collecting the items, then you will pay 17.5% VAT on the cost of the item and the postage. you may also pay duty but I don't think there is any on DVDs.
So if it gets assessed 17.5% of $47 + say GBP5.

Support local businesses, buy it here and don't worry about any troubles.

I've not ordered DVD's from the US but I did buy CD's from CDNow (before Amazon bought them) and I never got stung for VAT or Import duty. Must have been lucky :)

The Heroes box isn't out here until November.

It's the same thing with Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, it's released in the US on July 31st, there is no UK date as yet. I've ordered it from Amazon US, even with postage it'll be cheaper than buying it here because of the dollar/pound exchange rate.

What local businesses? all the dvd shops in my local town are part of big chains and most are overpriced anyway.

I buy most of my Dvd's off the internet or in the supermarket.

Its not actually me who wants it its my housemate.

According to play.com, it's being released on 3rd September, for £9.99.
