Can this router do 20mb? and Modem levels
 

Hey all just wondering if anyone could help me, at the moment I'm sharing the connection with my brother via Modem connected via the Router then the PC's coming out of the router (via ethernet)

The router we have at the moment is

We 'do' get 10mb but not majority of the time, I'm wondering if the router could be a problem that I'm not looking at, I've put in for a modem upgrade also just waiting for it to arrive.

The manual states its 10/100 lan I have no reason to think the wan is any different so you should be fine. Dont worry about the errors.

According to the specs for this router that I can find, the WAN port is 10-BaseT and therefore capable of 10 Mbps max. A replacement would be a good idea. I have a Linksys WRT54GS which has a 100BASE-TX WAN port capable of 100 Mbps and would recommend it without hesitation.

Further investigation reveals that the latest model does indeed have a 100BAS-TX WAN port so I guess you need to check the version number.

OK, checked the Netgear site and v4 has 100BASE-TX on the WAN port but earlier versions DO NOT. So, check your label on the bottom of the router. If it says RP614v4 its ok, otherwise not.

RP614v2 is the current router, so i guess i need to upgrade that aswell :S

its hard to say for sure as it doesnt list the speed of the WAN port if but it seems to indicate that its underpowered as that Netgear RP614UK uses a Processor: 1 x ARM 50 MHz, were as if you look at the 3rd party firmware list for the good netgear they all use far faster CPU's http://wiki.openwrt.org/TableOfHardware
150MHz through as much as 500MHz today.

you dont say what modem you currently have but its got the cm-10240-384 so your on the tw part and its set for 10Mbit down, 384kBit up right now.

i suspect the routers slowing you down but you can test it easy enough , just get a second network card inside your brothers machine and set that up as the master machine and have yours go to it direct without the router in place.

ohh i see its been determined V2 is it, i supose thats why its got the really slow CPU.

ok im confused now (networking isnt my main field so I could well just be a noob) im reading the manual for v2 of the router and it says under front panel

Internet light on Green the Wan has detected a 100mbps device attached

Internet light on Amber the wan has detected a 10mbps device attached

im confused now cuz if the wan on the v2 cant handle 100mbps how can it detect a connection to one? :confused: :confused:


Also in section 2.2 it states The cable or dsl modem broadband access device must provide a standard 10 baseT or 100 baseTX

I think the best thing you can do is wait and see how it all acts when your upgraded cuz im just confused now

If you get a drop in speed, remove the router and direct connect to a PC for temporary testing, if the speed returns then you need to go for a v4. Got the same situation at my sisters but unfortunately her power levels to the modem are shocking so she is only getting 6-7Mb until the tech comes out otherwise I would know the answer ;) She has my old V3 ready to hook up lol

as you say Zing if it can detect the change then it must at some hardware level support 100 WAN unless they fiddled the firmware bit flipping on another part to try and shift the old gear.

its always werth haveing a really good look on the http://wiki.openwrt.org/TableOfHardware page as you will note that the netgear is untested or WIP(but its on there so they are reasonably sure its got the hardware so might/should run openwrt).

its been a while since i checked that page but i cant seem to find any (wireless if your thinking about that option)11n parts so far, and they will have the better WAN port and throughput etc.
