Is there a way of installing an executable programme on a USB memory stick?
I'm sure I read somewhere that it is even possible to load a full Operating System on a stick.

Not sure what you're trying to achieve, but http://portableapps.com/ is worth a look.

Well you can install it by directing the program to it. But to actually self contain the program and have it actually run on different machines is a different story. Some programs need ddl files installing and registry entries to run correctly some do not so try it and see.Usb sticks can be made bootable and there is a new type mainly for this purpose . These will boot just like a normal boot device like a cd or hdd performanace of say a linux distro from this device would be a lot better than a live cd

I'd like to be able to carry a copy of a programme with me and run it on any PC that I like.

You can install Standard Applications using the standard windows tools, as the USB drive appears to be a normal drive to Windows. Note: Apps installed this way will probably only work on the PC you installed them on.
Also, some Applications (such as Firefox) are available in "portable" versions. These can be copied to any device and just run straight from the device. They will run from the device, but you may not be able to store preferences/configuration info. Also, if your USB drive has a U3 logo on it, you'll be able to get a whole load of software than you can install on the device, and it will function exactly like a normal Windows Appplication. http://www.u3.com/ Finally, yes, as long as your computer supports booting from USB, you can install an operating system on the device. There are various versions of Linux that will boot from USB stick, and you can install a heavily cut down version of Windows using the tools and instructions at http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ |

Yep, I can still run a full blow version of Windows entirely from a floppy disk. Mind you, it's Windows 95 (OSR2.5) and the floppy is an LS120. Very slow but handy for running system recovery apps.

Once upon a time there was a BBC computer that allowed you to plug in an EPROM for each operating system you wanted, BBC Basic or 6502 Assembler, for example, nice to see things have moved on ;) :D
