[Merged] Duffy to leave NTL

I had this link sent to me.

http://www.brandrepublic.com/bulleti...rly-next-week/

Quote:

LONDON - Simon Duffy, the NTL Telewest executive vice-chairman and former CEO, is expected to leave the media giant as early as next week with a £16m payoff.
His contract expires on January 15 and the cable broadcaster has said it will not renew his employment with the firm.

Duffy joined NTL as chief operating officer from Orange in March 2003, and was replaced as chief executive at NTL by Stephen Burch in December 2005.

Ahh but he's managed to.... errrr.... it's on the tip of my tongue... I'm sure there is something...

Nope can't think of anything worthwhile he's done to deserve any kind of pay-off whatsoever let alone a multi-million pound one.

Sorry I don't follow - contract expires? So why do they have to pay to not renew something that ended

So now we know why he joined and didn't imprpove anything. Otherwise he would have been asked to stay....

Because of the employment laws this Country has you can't just get rid of someone even if they are on a contract. If you have something like 1 or 2 (i think 2) years continuous employment you have to be offered redundancy. Strange i know but people on contracts almost have the same rights as someone in a permanent job.

I think strictly you only have to be given one week for every year you have worked, but only scrooge companies do that. Still, i wouldn't disagree that 16m is too much.

Edit: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onelife/...w_redund.shtml

Knew i wasn't talking rubbish!

Re: Duffy to leave NTL

what's he done to warrant any kind of pay off?

Burch and Berkett are always going on about how ntl should move on from the mistakes made previously (ie when Duffy was in charge) and how they are now moving in the right direction :o:

Downloads that didnt apply to me, I have been on fixed term employment and was able to be simply not renewed (sacked) without compensation.

What has duffy achieved? and why is a company whom he couldnt get making a decent profit giving him 16 million? I have seen much lower bonuses goto successful execs.

How long were you employed for continuously and in what year was you your contract not renwed? They are very new laws i believe.

Until now I''d never heard of Simon Duffy! £16M sounds like a lot of money though! To what extent did he bring TV pictures into my flat?

I'm sure the two guys with the van and a set ladders who had to wade through the tangle of chopped off co-ax in the cabinet outside my flat would like, and deserve, a fraction of that obscene amount of money!
