CPU heatsink\fan recomendations
 

Hi all

Im looking for some decent air cooling for my E6600, at the moment im getting 38 idle and 47-50 under load. I would like to shave a bit off of that and then start overclocking.

Any suggestions would be greatly apreaciated.

artic freezer 7 pro m8 all the way with some artic silver thermal compound

Actually, the Arctic Cooling MX-1 compound which comes pre-applied to the heatsink has consistenly out-performed Arctic Silver 5 in tests, by quite a margin in many cases.

Regardless, it's a great cooler. I've got the 64 version on my X2 3800+ and idle at around 27C with the fan throttled right back to 5V.

linky to the tests please cuz I got lower temps on an 805 using the artic silver over the standard compound :) although I do see the logic in them using good stuff on it

I can't remember specific links off the top of my head, but every review I read prior to purchasing the Freezer 64 Pro which involved some kind of MX-1 testing was extremely positive about it. Arctic Cooling's surfaces are unusually rough - while most high-endmanufacturers place an emphasis on a mirror-smooth finish, AC take a more unique approach and, combined with their own compound, it seems to work!

Prices seem good aswell, overclockers has them at 11.99+vat this week only. shame there are none shown on that page lol.

Are they easy to fit if you have never worked on the inside of a tower before?

well the skt 775 are very easy to install.The old hsf needs to be removed by using a flat ended screwdriver and turning the retention clips anti clockwise(I think) then carefully pull each one and the hsf will remove. Installing the Artic freezer 7 pro may not be as simple depending on room in the case as these are big and do need to be installed properly.You may have to remove the board to ensure correct fitting.
Skt 939 754 and 478 heat sinks are even easier to remove as its all just a cam system the amd version has 1 lever to move the 478 (p4) has 2
Skt a amd and older pentiums are another thing totally as these require some force to remove the clip and if your not sure dont do this as you may crack the core
