Looking for hosting provider

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a host for a personal website for me. It won't be a big deal -- it's just really for me to experiment with web design on a personal site. It will also be used for e-mail, and hosting my blog. I don't need masses of space, and I'm not expecting masses of traffic.

I'd also like to register a (.net) domain name, and want this in my name rather than belonging to the host (if you see what I mean).

I've found http://www.hosthere.co.uk/students/ , but I don't know enough about this to know if I'm getting a good deal! Does anybody have any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Tristan

I also have hosting with I-Web Solutions & am amazed at what you get for the price - both the package & the customer service feel like they should be much more expensive.

I also have purchased a domain from 123-Reg, with no problems, transfer of the domain to my hosts DNS was hassle free. As I bought a 'co.uk' I just got my nominet confirmation sorted :tu:

One of Cable Forum's members sells domain name registration, it may be worth having a look for comparison - check out the link in the sig of Mr_love_monkey.

My host - Webmania http://webmania.co.uk/cgi-bin/hostshop1.cgi

£20 for 500mb / 6gb transfer/month. Can't complain about it, does what it says on the tin.

I'm currently using Penguin Computer Services... have been for a long time, and am very happy, especially with the level of customer services, as well as reliability of the service. They're slightly more expensive than I-Web... but i'm happy staying with PCS. I've looked into signing up with I-Web, but theres one thing holding me back... and thats the Control Panel I-Web uses... I can't stand cPanel.. sooo many bad experiences with it, PCS, uses the Ensim control panel which i get on with soo much better.

PCS's website is: http://www.pcs-net.com/

I'm with Dreamhost - got a good deal thanks to a promotional code. It cost me $9.24 per year, and I get the following:

†¢ 2400 MB Storage
†¢ 120 GB Transfer ($1/GB extra)
†¢ 3 Domains Hosted
†¢ 15 Sub-Domains Hosted
†¢ 600 Mailboxes
†¢ 75 Shell Users
†¢ One FREE .com/.net/.org/.info domain
†¢ CGI/FrontPage 2002 Extensions
†¢ PHP4, perl, python, C, C++
†¢ Unlimited MySQL Databases
†¢ IMAP, POP3, and Web-Based email access
†¢ Unlimited email aliases, auto-responders, announcement lists, discussion lists, media streaming, and more...

PM me if you want any info, and the promotional code. Bear in mind that this is a special offer, so after the promotional period is up (12 months after sign-up) you'd revert back to their normal pricing - although it's not automatically done if you choose so.

This is a US-based server too, so if you'd rather have a UK-based server, then I'd look elsewhere (i-web seem OK to me ;) )

Yup highly recommend I-Web too! I tend to use UKReg for registring domains, easy to setup/configure and reasonable cheap.

I signed up to HostHere (http://www.hosthere.co.uk) a couple of months ago to host my site, and so far I've been very impressed with their customer service and reliablility. I would recommend them to anyone - they seem to be very honest.
