2 Master Boot Records

I do a virus scan every week. For the last two weeks I see that Norton reports that it has scanned 2 MBRs.

Does anyone know why I would have 2 MBRs?

2 Hard Drives? 2 Partitions?

Re: 2 Master Boot Records

AFAIK one MBR per hard drive and one boot sector per partition..

Sinister, as in, demon hard drives appearing from thin air? Cant think of any other reason for it, is the Virus scanner scanning CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives, some discs might have an MBR.

START > CONTROL PANEL > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS > COMPUTER MANAGEMENT

Click on Disk Management.

How many partitions are showing for your HDD?

I've just done a scan, never looked at how many MBR's were reported before.
And, I'm showing 2 as well. I have two identical SATA drivers - not raided.

Re: 2 Master Boot Records

I might be wrong.....

But isn't that what you should have - one MBR for each drive?

Re: 2 Master Boot Records

Yes, but the OP only has one drive!

Yes, and Goldchip isn't the OP. He/she said:

The bit about having 2 identical SATA drives led me to believe that there were two drives installed on the machine that was the subject of goldchip's question.

We have yet to hear back from the OP (meld 51, who apparently only has one drive) about my suggestion of checking in the Administrative Tools to see what drives/partitions are reported there.

Re: 2 Master Boot Records

OK did what Raistlin said and lo and behold:
I have Compact Flash card in a slot at the moment that I forgot about. The computer manager says that it is a separate partition. It's where I transfer WMF files to go on my PDA. There are just music files on there so I still don't understand why it should have an MBR though.

But that's what's causing it.

:tu: Bingo :D

Glad that's cleared up :)

Thanks Raistlin,

Yes I did get a new merc....been meaning to update my blog but I've been too busy lately. I got a 4.3 litre E class.....goes like a rocket for such a large car. Very pleased with it!

Nice.

Had a look at your blog, that's a serious number of miles for any car.

Hope mine gets that far, just about to reach 100k (M Registered Citreon Xantia).
