What software is good at shrinking avi files to a size of your choice? Thanks

first question is , why do you want to shrink them ??? :)

edit :- a little bit of googling says that you will have to turn them into a kvcd  :D

Get a copy of Real Producer and shrink them down to about 1/7th of their original size!

If you just want to shrink the data, can't you use Winzip??

winzp will barely do anything to already-compressed data, plus they you'd have to decompress it before use...

I tried it using the XP built in zip thingy - a 55MB avi file compressed to 50MB ;)

decompressing should not be a problem, the OP only wants to store the files.

Converting to divx would compress the file size, but it is a 'lossy' conversion.

I would 'bite the bullet' & save them as the native files - and get a dvd writer, so much more versatile :)

Ok, first things first, what codecs is the file currently using, what resolution etc, what length and size is it just now?

Download and install GSpot - it lists information about AVI files.

But first things first, is it a single AVI or several that you want to fit on the disc? If it's more than one, I'd just use an extra disc. If you want them smaller you'll have to re-encode them, which will take time and lose quality, though how much will depend on how much smaller the file(s) need to be.
