Computer Wont Boot
I'm trying to solve a problem on my parents computer. Any help would be useful
When you power it up, the power supply is making like a whistling sound and the speaker in the front of the cases clicks continously, fans are al spinning. The monitor never even starts up. Ive disconnected the CD, HD, and floppy just to see if there was any difference and it was still the same. I'm struggling as i have no diagnostics with the monitor not going from stand by to on. |
Re: Computer Wont Boot
First thing i would try is jumping the cmos to clear bios then try again,if it still fails try reseating ram and gfx always a good start

Re: Computer Wont Boot
That power supply sounds dodgy, but I'm sure someone who knows what he's talking about will be around shortly :dunce: :)

Re: Computer Wont Boot
see if you can find the mobo manual, might give you a hint as to what the clicks mean?
|
Re: Computer Wont Boot
Does the psu smell likes its been hot? or is it hot the fact the fans spin shows its still working at least sending some power to the board(dont mean its ok though)
|
Re: Computer Wont Boot
PSU doesnt smell, the sound is like you get from old coils
Jump the cmos???? well i've never jumped that b4, how??? [edit], just found out how to jump the cmos from the stick on the inside of the case |
Re: Computer Wont Boot
near the battery there will be a set of 3 pins with a coloured jumper(dunno how best to describe this) it should be labels cmos or cl** move the jumper onto other other pin and middle one wait 5 mins move back and try again,or just remove the button cell for 5 mins replace and retry,
Edit damn i should have waited a minute :D |
Re: Computer Wont Boot
ill turn this one off now to get the other one going and see what happens, ill let you know tomorrow what happened

Re: Computer Wont Boot
check gfx cable.try reseating all cards then try a different psu just in case.If neither solves the problem then you have a hardware fault,Imo i would say motherboard but its just a hunch
|
Re: Computer Wont Boot
i reset the CMOS and re seated the memory and it was no different
Other than a modem there are no cards in the machine, its using onboard graphics |
Re: Computer Wont Boot
Psu to check next then if thats no good ,Ive had a look and its not a new board,Hope im wrong if its not the psu then it sounds terminal
|
Re: Computer Wont Boot
Id say the mobo is dead......
|
Re: Computer Wont Boot
Probably bad memory or a problem with the onboard graphics. Have you tried taking the memory out and re-seating it? Maybe just try one DIMM at a time if you can. Wouldn't hurt to try a PCI display card if all else fails.
