a clean install of XP
 

hey everyone, I know it has been done before, but I just want to clarify something, before my mate lets me loose to reek havoc on his "rig" :D

he has win 98 (se i think) but he has xp that he wants to install.

I suggested he does a clean install so here goes.

he needs to:
A: back up his data & take notes of any configuration like internet
B: make up a boot disk, just incase.
C: put in the windows XP disk then reboot his system
D: gets the option to format his system & choose NTFS.
E: just tell it to install with all connections still attached, like modem

this should do it, shouldn't it or what else should I tell him.

make sure you have installation disk for the motherboard chipset drivers, especially if there is onboard sound & NIC, also drivers for the graphics card & printer.

You could run the check program that's on the XP cd first to make sure that all is compatible.

these would be installed at end of XP instalation?

When I' do a fresh install of XP - I do.... Anti virus > chipset drivers > sound card (if it's seperate) > gfx drivers.

If it's going to have sp2 then I think I'd install that before the antivirus. Unless it's got sp2 already on the cd of course.

edit - and I don't mean anything by this..... but if it's not a %100 legal XP disc then do NOT have ANY network connections on it while installing.

I can't remember if it asked for the motherboard drivers during the install, or if I ran that seperately afterwards, I think it was afterwards, - the printer was picked up during the installation & it asked for the disk.

make sure it is not connected to the internet while instaling , and if you can make sure you have an upto date copy of an antivurus and firewall package to dump straight on it after it is installed :tu:

Not sure, will find out when I get there. all I know is that he has a copy of XP

I remember my printer got picked up, but I was not asked for any other drivers

well,

Thank you everyone for your help, after all that I was trying to do, the git, went and just upgraded without reformatting his drive, oh well, I take it he was impatient, cause he done it without me.

he backed up a hell of a lot of data apparently 7 CDs worth, and he never lost anything when it changed from 98se to XP. Better to be safe than sorry!

but he is still on FAT32 which should not bother him too much.

so again thank you for the help, which in the end I did not need.

If he wants to convert to NTFS later, he can use this command:

convert c: /fs:ntfs

Substitute the HDD letter to match the one the install is on. You need to execute the command in CMD.

Nope, theoretically, it leaves all your data intact.

The only possible problem in changing to ntfs is that the cluster size might default to 512bytes instead of 4kb.

so how can he check what file system he has just now before I give him this info?
and just to be on the safe side I will check as well here so that he knows exactly how to do it.
