Slow Speeds
 

OK this is hard to explain Ppl, but here we go

Every Few weeks ye, i get slow downs on my Broadband, i mean complere slow downs and sometimes my upload runs at 1.1 kb a second when i have the 4 meg connection and this cant be my area, twice out of the last 6 times this has happened it has only been my area, because i have 2 friends who stay real close to me like 2 mins away from me and they only got it same times as i got slow downs twice, every other time its been just me.

so i phoned telewest up and they said they would send someone out, few days later an engineer came out and said it was wires outside my house that were wet so he replaced them, and i was told it wouldnt happen again, but it has happened twice in 4 days now

anyone got any ideas why?

I am assuming you are talking about the box outside where the wires are getting wet? Is the box damaged in some way allowing the wires to get wet? Worst case scenario is someone being malicious and causing them to be wet?

ok just done a speed test because connection seems slow tonight.

Downstream593 Kbps (74.1 KB/sec)640 Kbps (inc. overheads)Upstream184 Kbps (23.0 KB/sec)198 Kbps (inc. overheads)

now that is not a 4 meg connection, and my friends connection is fine.

can anyone suggest why i am getting these problems?

So your saying your not sure the wires are wet again outside then?

Not sure which speed test your using there but I find this speed test more reliable.

1st 128K took 281 ms = 466448 Bytes/sec = approx 3881 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 375 ms = 349525 Bytes/sec = approx 2908 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 281 ms = 466448 Bytes/sec = approx 3881 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 344 ms = 381023 Bytes/sec = approx 3170 kbits/sec

Looking at those results its not that perfect but its not really that bad than what the other speed test was making your connection out to be. :)

Which one did you use incidently?

Connection is down tonight again ppl

upstream is really bad, 3.5kb a second, took me at least 5 minutes to load this website up

I think its best you call Blueyonder technical support (0845 142 4422) to see if they are able to resolve your issue or phone customer services (150 from a Telewest phone line or otherwise 0845 142 0000) again and report this as it could be the original problem of the wires outside getting wet and they need to get to the route of why this keeps reoccuring if it is this what is causing your connection problems. :)

Dude, I had the same problem a few weeks back not long after I was upgraded to 4mb, I phoned BY support and they switched me over to a quieter pipe (or whatever they call it). Supposedly he said my area was experiencing a lot of traffic so he got an engineer to swap me over to another one... all over the phone. Well anyway my download is faster now but my upload is crazy (see my other post from today (BY 4mbit) Upload via FTP causing mad CPU USAGE).

I'm in Sheffield (S12) by the way.

Ok I tried that, it doesn't help my upload problem (cpu usage), but it's useful to know.

i called blueyonder today and they said that the problem is at there side and its the UBR server i connect to which is UBR Server 7, so i explained that my friends must connect to the same server as they are in same area and he told me that someone who lives right next door to me with blueyonder can be on a different server, is this true?

anyways, he said it should be sorted in a few days, and i would be creditied for a weeks loss in service in total.

Possible I guess but highly highly highly unlikely.

The upstream split is just an example, you could have several nodes being combined onto the same upstreams as well as using the same downstream.

Point is though one node per uBR doesn't happen and it's very very rare to have a node per uBR card even, so the chances of someone next door being on a different card are remote, uBR nil.

Nodal boundaries are usually different streets, doesn't make much odds a few extra or fewer homes in a node whatever supplies the most efficient use of the coax, and usually homes in same road will take their feeds from the same amps further up and eventually node.

Point is there are many taps to each bridge amp, and usually more than one bridge amp to each node, rather than the 1:1:1 your diagram suggested.

Not saying it's not possible mind you :) just very unlikely!
