No record of that code in the M$ KB.

Re: Windows Update

I got exactly the same error lunchtime today on a PC I had completely wiped and was reinstalling. Only occcurred once Win XP SP2 was installed.

It cleared itself eventually, but only after I had installed the Sun Java stuff, and done a couple of reboots. Don't know if thats a red herring or not, but since M$ can't supply java anymore, even parts of the M$ update menu scripts don't work properly untill you work out you have to go to the third party source. That really clever - not :dunce:

Re: Windows Update

If I recall correctly when you go to windows update you get 2 choices, express or custom. I know I tried both. Eventually it cleared when I selected the express option. In the meantime I may well also have run the M$ office online update thingy.

On that basis I can't really say exactly what I did to clear it, I'm just happy that it cleared. :dozey:

Re: Windows Update

my personal advice would be to take the error as a hint. I have not heard a single good thing about SP2 yet. EVERYONE I know who has installed it has had to completely rebuild their machine afterwards as it knackers it up. And most of the people I know, including myself, work in the IT industry.

DON'T INSTALL IT - wait for the refined version!!!!!!

I've heard of SOME people having problems, but now downloaded and installed it on 6 machines without a hitch ...

Re: Windows Update

One possible cause is your firewall. I had problems getting SP2 and updates from the new Microsoft Update site two weeks ago. I eventually traced it to a rule I had set up in ZAPro to prevent Generic Host Processes keeping port 1025 open. I removed the "blockall" rule and was able to update to SP2 and other updates without any problems. I have had no issues with SP2 yet and even though I have not reinstated the firewall rule, port 1025 is now closed.

Although according to some answers here it may be a server problem. I have just tried Windows Update and it worked fine.

No problems here and I've installed it on two of my machines.
In my opinion, I think SP2 failing (just like every other software failure) is down to user error.

user error? how? windows update > download and install!! need to be giving people some credit here, I think they can install stuff!! And let's face it, it wouldn't be the first time MS (or anyone else for that matter) have released software / patches / updates before testing in most usuage situations.

On the other hand (and in the developers defence), another thing to remember is that it is nearly impossible for it to be tested fully, as no one can replicate every eventuality and circumstance in computing. There are simply too many variables.

I built my 40th computer with XP sp2 (fresh install obviously) Last week... And the only time I had a problem was on my dad's laptop - and that wasn't a fresh install.

Maybe the problems are mostly on updates? I don't know - but I can only give my experience.
