And that tune Nah nah nah nah Arrrrggghh!!!

bopdude 21-06-2003 06:33

Well it's happened as predicted see here for all the crazyness, excitement

and here for more, if you can stand it

Alan Waddington 21-06-2003 09:19

That book has been hyped up so much that I'm already bored. There'll be some (independent) reviews out soon, so it'll be clear whether its worth blowing our hard earned cash.

There are also a lot of 'fake' book 5's out on the net. Have a look at this review page: http://www.virtualbookcase.com/book/detail/45000493

Alan

PS. Yes, I'll almost certainly buy one, but no rush :)

poolking 21-06-2003 09:20

So who's got one already, hands up.

Not me. :)

Like anything that gets continually rammed down your throat, you get sick of it - David Beckham, Big Brother etc.

Tentatively puts his hand up, mumbles something about it being for his friends children. :-)

If anyone is interested 'The Works' (a discount bookstore) is selling it for £8.99, the RRP is £16.99.

dilli-theclaw 21-06-2003 12:13

I just got my amazon copy (£8.49) ...

See you guys later - MUCH later.

don't they charge p+p though?

Gogogo 21-06-2003 13:21

Mixed feelings, I suppose it's positive that an author has succeeded to ignite the interests of the nation's children and children who read books, yes, even Harry Potter, are preferable to louts who would otherwise disturb the neighbourhood! So in a way can't be a bad thing, but like others one gets tired of the media circus who in a desert of sensationalism need to draw attention to some other issue. Never read Harry Potter myself, prefer writers like the late Patrick O'Brien but I'm fascinated by seeing the excitement that children have, God bless them, who want to read it.

:wavey:

retep 21-06-2003 16:19

I,ve got mine from Amazon. reduced P&P by combining it with other orders.

imback 21-06-2003 17:27

Is the whole idea not just ripped off the kids program "the worst witch" that was about when I was a kid, long before Mr Potter.

The important point is that many children are excited about Harry Potter, it's great to see so many children wanting to read, that can only be positive.

:)

well said that man/woman!!

does anyone know who dies yet?

any1 finished it already?

musey 22-06-2003 11:31

I've finished it. It was amazing.

Not saying anymore as it'll spoil it for people that haven't read it. Just waiting for the boyfriend to finish reading his, so we can discuss the book!

Alan Waddington 22-06-2003 16:41

There was a big crate of 'em in the supermarket yesterday, so purchased a copy. They were disappearing at a modest rate, but there was no feeding frenzy at the trough.

I finished it this morning. This book was aimed more at teenagers. The characters are no longer black & white. The good guys are fallible. There are some love interests, although nothing steamy.

Reading the first books brought on a feeling of nostalgia for those early school days, when 'O' levels were years away, homework was modest & life was simpler. This book reminded me more of my uncertain teenage years and didn't provide the escapism offered by the earlier books, nor the mature viewpoint provided by books intended for adults. It was like being a teenager again; no longer a child, yet not yet an adult.

kronas 22-06-2003 16:45

i heard on the radio that a 15 years old from essex has speed read through the 766 page book in 104 mins

Captain_caveman 22-06-2003 20:11

I have bought a copy.
Although will not be reading it as it is a first edition (ok doesn't mean much at the mo but in a few years mmm..) It could be worth a few bob.

I havn't read any of the books but agree that it is better for the kids to be reading the books rather than getting square eyes watching the tv or staring at a computer monitor for hours on end.

I prefer the lord of the rings, although being a hard read at first, once you have read the first few chapters it becomes much easier.

rippedoff 24-06-2003 16:02

Bloody postperson (my postie is a very attractive woman) woke me up at 06:40 on Saturday morning as the thing was to big & heavy to go through the letterbox. Started reading it (it's actually for my daughter!) at 06:50 ! Fell asleep at around 08:00 !
:spin:

Atomic22 26-06-2003 21:39

i got mine from asda , they were selling them cheaper than anywhere else in the uk.

grum1978 26-06-2003 22:36

how much they selling them for?

gazzae 26-06-2003 22:55

my girlfriend brought it. I was casually flipping through it and mentioned "whos XXXXXXX" she replied and i said "Oh right, apparently they die".

lets say i wasn't popular.

preacher 27-06-2003 11:09

Got it for £10 via amazon (incl P&P) and am half way throyugh it and Harry (and the others) are much more grown up now and he is somewhat of an annoying git now!

Nor 30-06-2003 00:38

Yeah I got mine from Asda, can't remember how much exactly now but it was about £8 or something. Anyway, I don't really think the HP books are totally aimed at kids. I'm 29 and have thoroughly enjoyed the 5 books so far.

You mean he wasn't annoying in the first place?
I found the first book to be quite amaturish.

I've not red the latest yet, but something tells me that whoever dies is brought back to life, or it's one of the adults

And with regards to the films, could someone please please please give the guy who plays harry some acting lessons?

Martin 03-07-2003 23:18

I still haven't bought a copy of this yet! And still don't know who dies:) Far to much hype in my opinion.
