BMR When?

I got all excited about the new upgrades only to read that a new BMR upgrade is due out separately. Will this cure the blasted sound clipping and is it due out this year? My expensive setup can't take much more!

Re: BMR When?

I don't think theres any dates planned yet. I wouldn't expect it in the next two months. It should indeed include the fix to stop the problem with broadcasts peaking above legal audio level limits incoming to us.

Hell yes, BMR2 is not the massive step that Langley Cr3 has been. Langley had to go from virtually nothing to the same level that 3 or 4 seperate upgrades on Bromley has had.

Langley didn't start off looking at using Liberate for its interactive.

BMR2 (or whatever) does however have to fit in with any core system upgrades and any other work plans.

I'm sure someone will start leaking dates soon.

Re: BMR When?

so will BMR/mr2 make everything look like the new LCR3?? If it does, i will be well pleased? And also, will ALL bugs be fixed? Unlike MR1, which did nothing, in fact it caused more bugs! (which was a bit of a joke!!)

:D chears anyway

Tristan 08-03-2004 21:27

Re: BMR When?

I think that the next Bromley code release (I don't think it's called MR2 anymore, but I can't remember what it is called) will look pretty much identical to LCR3, but probably with the coloured buttons having different functions on the Now And Mini Guide. Dammit, I'm going to have to get used to Telewest's terminology. Anyway, it looks from the LCR screenshots that the coloured button functions -- reminders, etc -- have been picked to be the same as the old Langley software. I can't see them wanting to confuse Bromley users with this download, so the buttons will probably remain the same for us.

It's such a minor difference anyway, it's probably not even worth mentioning.

asdf 09-03-2004 13:39

Re: BMR When?

Although surely they'd want the buttons the same over both platforms, unless they are scrapping the idea of uniformity!

Re: BMR When?

i just want the sound fixed and i'll be happy. it's the only thing that's fcuked me right off. every other channel has it and it's so annoying. i'd love to smack the idiot who thought that fixing the sound at plus ten or whatever was a good idea. And before someone says it's the channels who broadcast the sound too loud. One thing. IT WAS OK BEFORE MR1!!!

McYorkie 15-03-2004 00:18

Re: BMR When?

Totally agree about the sound level issue - BBC World Service Radio on Ch868 is awful when listened to on its own channel with clipping and interference, but when the same feed is a "dirty" one - i.e. rebroadcast through another BBC channel such as Radio Wales on Ch870, or Radio 4 on Ch404 it's as clean as a bell - why the difference?

As to getting us on Bromley platform looking the same, well having seen the new Langley screenshots on DS, a) it'll be good to see in action on exCWC, and b) until then, would it be an easy step to simply change the colours used in the existing CR3 to match those of LCR3, in EPG and Email functionality?:D

There are some things that will always have to be different. They will never be in a position to assume that all subscribers have the new, dual-labeled remotes, so the Langley software will always refer to the 'Select' button, whereas Bromley will always refer to 'OK'. Tiny differences, but differences nonetheless.

According to Peter Litler over on DS, the Faults Dept. have informed him that the MR2 rollout will take place over the next 2 weeks.

Personally, I find this hard to believe, for the reasons I mention in the DS thread.

What do you lot think??
Can anyone else confirm anything??

I suppose we can't really complain considering how long Langley people had to wait for CR3. It's not like we're really missing out on anything except a colour scheme.

Re: BMR When?

Guys, don't you realise how crap "BMR" and "MR2" and so forth are as names? They're meaningless to any newcomers, and out-of-date as soon as the release happens.

And in any case, there won't be an announcement until the first download is sent out. That is the NTL way.

I told you the new names won't catch on. I know the next Bromley upgrade as BCR3, with other members saying BMR and MR2 so I can guess why people get confused.

Yeah, and from what you've said, it doesn't bother you, so why are you even posting on here about it? You're not contributing anything so pipe down. Oh and for your information, I've more or less started all the threads about sound issues for the last eight months.

d) if you have nothing to add, don't bother.

Well I feel I do have something to add, so I will bother.
I've never said it doesn't bother me, I would like this update as much as the next person. What I have maintained however, is that moaning on and on about the same thing is not going to get you anywhere, and it's certainly not going to speed up the release of the software.
Rest assured, as soon as there are dates, they will be available on these forums - they always are.

Browneggsandham ;)

EDIT: Oh by the way - I read your little bits of advice, and judging by that, you don't have much of any importance to add either

And what exactly do 33 posts of "I want the sound fixed now" contribute to the forum? We know that the last Bromley update made sounds which go above a threshold level go all crackly. NTL know this, too. NTL are no-doubt going to fix it in the next release. But do you really think that diverting every thread you see onto the topic of your audio issues is going to make the update happen even one second quicker?

We know what happens with the sound. We know why it happens. We even know what NTL are attempting to do as a workaround. We know you're unhappy about the situation. What more is there to discuss?

And O2X1: You might at least try, for the common good and all that...

Would make sense because the STBs need some kind of modification to allow the higher speeds I believe, at least the ones on Telewest did/do.

Will hopefully solve the problem some STBs have with crackling during large downloads or uploads.

If you've ever bothered to ever read anything that's ever been written about the MR1 **** up with the sound by changing it to a level that's just too high then you'll know that it's got absolutely nothing to do with the box and everything to do with a dodgy software upgrade that wasn't tested at all before they put it out.

I have. The fact that very few people on here (compared to the numbers of people who probably are using MR1) seem to have complained would suggest that the problem is as likely to have been caused by a dodgy box.

Have you conclusively eliminated the box hardware itself as the source of the problem (ie had the box replaced)?

You complain, but it does no good, and they blame the channels for pushing the sound level beyond the limit - and some fix it - funny how it was never a problem before MR1 though?

As for the STB remote volume, I give up all hope of that ever being usable - it would be better if it could have a user preference preset for level, as it is consistently louder by a considerable margin, than the terrestrial TV channels or the video - not just a bit different, but enough to be too loud going one way, and too quiet going the other.

I'll ask again. Has the box been replaced?

As I have stated previously, I have no problem with a crackling noise, and I am also running MR1. Has it occured to you that any bug in the software may only occur on certain models of box (or certain revisions of those models)?

It may also be that the box itself is knackered. They *do* fail a lot more frequently around update time, which is why NTL actually have to wait a while before rolling updates out (they need to ensure they have adequate stocks for any replacement boxes). That failure may not be anything major (ie the box may not just die, but may show random problems, like possibly the memory containing the part of the software that decodes the audio stream is corrupting the audio that is output).

All I am saying is that if NTL have not replaced the box, ensure they do. If the new box still has the same problem, then that problem is elsewhere (in this case probably the software). One of the basic principles of fault finding is to eliminate the simple causes first.

Stuart 13-07-2004 23:29

I am not denying there are problems with MR1, and I too wish the volume control on the remote worked (if nothing else, it could help solve the signal level problems).

I just think that if I had the same problems with the STB that garyparsons seems to be having, I would complain to NTL until they repaired or replaced the STB. I wouldn't wait for a software update that may or may not fix the problem, and going on NTL's (& C&W's) past performance could be a long time away.

Re: BMR When?

already had them out, changed the box, same deal, changed it back seen as THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BOX. The best bit about that though is that when you ring up they say they've never heard of this problem?? One look at this forum tells me otherwise.

It's nothing to do with the volume control.
It's everything to do with the level of the volume in the box set by the new software.

scastle, your location says that you are in london? this problem only happens on bromley. unless they've rewired the network then i'm not surprised that this doesn't affect you.

in my case i'm using a surround amp for the sound on the tv. the center speaker sounds like it's on a snap cracke and pop advert on most channels. And before someone wades in with some comments about my setup, it works fine and dandy playing dvd's at twice the volume i listen to the tv so it ain't goosed. also..

1. before MR1 the volume in the stb was set at +6
2. after MR2, the volume in the stb was cranked up to +10 (to make the alarm louder apparently)

My equipment is fine. There's nothing wrong with it.

The only thing that is wrong is the software. I can't alter that.

I think that's as simple as i can make it.

Tristan 13-07-2004 23:57

Re: BMR When?

From what I understand, neither 4000s nor Samsungs have the audio problem... maybe just threatening cancellation until they change your box will work?

EDIT: And all of London is on the Bromley network. They haven't "rewired" them, they've been CWC/Bromley from the start.

Fair enough. Just thought that a possibly faulty box was something worth eliminating.

Although my location says London, I am actually in Bromley (about 3 or 4 miles from the Super Head End), so I am definately on the Bromley network. So, yes. Any problems on the Bromley network can possibly affect me.

Edit: garyparson, a couple of questions: Do you have a Pace 1000 or 2000 box? Do you have 1Mb Broadband delivered through it? If you can answer yes to both, NTL may be upgrading your box anyway. They are upgrading my Pace 1000..

Actually, as I understand it, the Samsung boxes (after a few initial problems) are good boxes. Yes, the Pace 1000 is probably the best Pace box, but I haven't heard many complaints about the 2000

You have. Several people (myself included) have tried to offer you help that may fix the problem NOW, not in a few months or whenever NTL plan to release MR2 but ,TBH, you don't seem to want help. You do seem to want to argue.

And I just did a quick search on your posts. Nearly every one has had something to do with this issue. Now, I have no problems with you using the forum for complaining (it is part of the function of the forum after all) and nor is it my place to say anything even if I did have a problem, but if I had recieved sub-standard service from any company for as long as you appear to have from NTL, I would seriously consider changing suppliers, or at least threaten to do so.

Re: BMR When?

It was done to death a long time back on NTHW ... maybe even as far back as .COM.

1000 Box here, and can't remember the last time I heard an over-level sound distortion - the channels where it was common seem to had the appropriate adjusments made, so if you're suffering on the odd channel, it MAY be the channel, but if it's most channels, then I'd say it's the box, or the level on the SCART is upsetting the TV or video.

Tristan 14-07-2004 19:59

Re: BMR When?

Actually it's the 2000 (same architecture as the 1000 but with more RAM and a faster CPU) that's been commonly regarded as the best box to have. I don't really know why this is. I'd certainly go for a Samsung if I had the choice.

Re: BMR When?

i have a 4000# box on excwc and have never had this problem, but mine outputs its audio to the tv directly and i have no amp.

perhaps you are amplifying it too much. the volume on AV (cable) is lower on my system than the normal tv channels.

maybe its just me.

This can't be the case. I have a DI4000-N and I've noticed this problem. I've said this before, but I get the feeling it's only noticeable when the sound is routed through a speaker system.

While this is true, I think I see what he was trying to get at. London areas would not suffer from this problem as they are stuck on CR1 due to the cabling. Apparently. (I know you know this already Tristan ;))

I brought this point up with him a while ago, but it made no difference to him. The fact of the matter is we all know that some kind of problem with the sound levels exists, and that it should be sorted in the next software update. But incessent complaining isn't going to make that update come any quicker.
So like you say, although I have no problem with the point being raised - why should I - there's no need for it to be brought up in nearly every post.

garyparsons - like others have suggested to you in this thread, and I'm pretty sure I have done before, why don't you just switch providers if you're this unhappy. If you really are so annoyed with them, then surely you have no reason to stay

if that's your answer to these things then as i've said before, why don't you keep it to yourself as it's not a proper answer. i have no intention of using someone else.

i'm happy with everything else i get off ntl, phone, broadband but this issue with the sound is beyond the joke now.

So, you have three choices. Wait for NTL to fix the problem (which as previously stated may be months),look for alternative suppliers or get a Samsung box (if, as previously stated, all Pace boxes suffer from the same problem).

Re: BMR When?

It's not the box.

Before MR1, sound was fine and dandy
After MR1, sound was screwed

That kind of eliminates the box. Not hard to understand. Saying that, it must be cos i've said it countless times.

Tristan 17-07-2004 18:12

Re: BMR When?

And, as I've said countless times, of course it's the software, and all Pace boxes will be affected.

However, the Samsung boxes use a newer software build which does not have the problem.

The fact that your box worked correctly before the software update is irrelavent. After the update to MR1, it clearly isn't (whatever the reason).
Why is that so hard for you to understand?

But, as I have said countless times, you have two choices. Wait for NTL to download the updated software (which does apparently work around the problem) or replace the box with one that is not affected.

Seeing as NTL have not announced dates for the download, it could be next week, or anytime within the next few months. Given your problems with sound levels, I personally would ask for a new box. I have just taken delivery of a new Samsung, and, based on first impressions, I would say it's a far superior box to the Pace series.

Re: BMR When?

how is it wired to your cable? Do you notice the popping in the center speaker?

Stuart 26-07-2004 09:31

Re: BMR When?

Well, as stated before, I now have a Samsung box which doesn't suffer from the problem, but it used to be wired to a Pace 1000, via the Stereo Audio line out phonos. I have used IXOS cabling to connect the two. I don't use the video switching facilities of the Amp at all, so no video signal is routed through the Amp.

I didn't notice too much popping, but then I tend to watch TV with prologic decoding turned off. IMO pro-logic decoding just causes too great a loss of quality with a non-prologic encoded program (especially with music). If a program does offer pro-logic encoding (like most films, and some dramas), then I turn it on. The popping on the centre speaker was noticable, but not too bad.

Err, he was replying to someone else's question.

Anyway, he probably has had to sign a non-disclosure agreement, so by revealing too much, could have NTL take action against him. So yes, if you are a Beta tester, have signed an NDA and wish to avoid (potentially legal) action, yes it is a huge deal. I was under these agreements when I tested for Microsoft.

Don't mention it in the first place? Not difficult is it? Not if you've signed something? Not unless you're just being a (rhymes with punt).

So, no one knows this mystical date of release then. And don't say 'next year', cos someone said that last year, and guess what...

As I stated, he was answering someone else's question... Also, there is no need for insults (even disguised).

And, TBH, if the software is still in beta, I doubt anyone who knows the exact date would be willing to post it as it may change (particularly if they find a nasty bug).

He mentioned it because I asked him a question about it. So get off his back.

There's just no pleasing you is there? At least now you know that work is being done, and progress is being made. If you didn't know the BETA tests were taking place, then you'd you be complaining that you'd heard nothing from ntl instead.

And if you're that desperate for the next software version, why didn't you sign up to the BETA tests yourself? I'm sure it's been fixed in there, and we wouldn't have had to listen to you harping on about it. Everyone would be happy.

And by the way, when was there ever an official announcement from ntl regarding when software was to be released?

I've been waiting over a year now and am more than entitled to be cheesed off with the lack of progress of fixing a major issue like the sound being screwed. Unlike browneggsandspam I'm not happy til it's fixed. If i wanted a substandard service i'd still be on analogue.

If you bothered reading the post above, you would see that although Tristan's link does give vague dates for expected software releases, nowhere does it mention that BMR was expected this year, as you claim ntl said.

You didn't answer my question. Why did you not sign up to the BETA trials when they were announced, as surely that would have saved you waiting until the general release? And finally, no-where have I said I'm happy with the problem. I'm not, but I have other, more important things to worry about than a TV software release. As has been said before, if you're not happy with the service, then change providers. Complaining won't speed up the development of the software. If they had rushed it out, you would instead be complaining about why they hadn't ironed out any bugs before doing so.

I won't change my service provider? Why should i? I've said that before if you'd bothered to read my posts. Sound is the half most important thing about a tv service and I have every right to complain about it? I don't understand why you don't like me complaining about it? Bizzare. Don't like it, don't reply. Simple. You whining about my justified complaint ain't gonna stop me for one second so either bring something to the table or stfu.

Here we go again.

NTL know about the sound problem. No-one's in any doubt about that. It will definitely be fixed in the next Bromley software update -- it's already fixed in the (slightly newer) software for the Samsung.

The complain may be valid, or at least may have been until you were given a Samsung. What I don't understand though is how you think repeatedly whining about it on this board is going to make the software update appear even one second quicker.

You started off with people on your side. But going on and on and on and on about the same issue -- when it doesn't even affect you any more! -- ****es people off.

Please, change the record.

People have opinions. Just because you don't like them doesn't allow you the right to tell them to stfu as you put it.

And too be honest you're not adding anything to the topic by talking about the same thing constantly. So maybe you should follow your own advice :)

Out of curiosity, why didn't you join the BETA team which would have given you the chance to complain at people who actually deal with the software?

Re: BMR When?

Gary:

As far as I can tell, NTL will never release an exact date for the release of the software. Basically because if they say (for example) it will be released on the 2nd January and then discover a major bug which will require re-writing a large part of the software, thus the release date will be pushed back, possibly quite a way. You will not bring the release date forward by moaning about it and telling people to stfu. You will also not persuade NTL to release this date.

Any employee involved in the planning of the release (who would know) has probably had it written in their contract that they will not reveal this sort of information. In my experience, companies often regard the release of "commercially sensitive" information as gross misconduct, and therefore a sackable offence.

Now, I (& others) have offered you solutions that will work now, not next year, or whenever NTL plan to release the software, but you don't want to take them.

Ok, so you are happy with your NTL phone & BB. Fine. Drop the DTV, and go to Sky (which may work out cheaper anyway). I believe NTL will let you drop the DTV but keep the Phone and BB.

garyparson 26-12-2004 03:10

Re: BMR When?

Thanks for your opinions but err how about no thanks. When they fix the sound I'll shut up about it. That's if it's even fixed properly and they haven't cranked it up yet again.

Every other software release date gets release by people wetting themselves to tell us, so sooner or later (and after a year, I'm guessing it's the latter) it'll be leaked out.
