http://www.miranda-im.org/ (as a previous trillian subscriber I gave away my licence after finding this.. it's that good)

http://www.leechget.net/ (my favourite download manager without the adware or spyware you get with other similar products)

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ (easily the best free FTP client - and getting better all the time)

http://www.avantbrowser.com/ (the best of the large number of tabbed IE front end browsers currently available) http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ -> the best of the rest ;)

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/ (my email client of choice)

http://www.openoffice.org/ (no introduction required here)

http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/download.htm (the most comprehensive and highly optimised file archiver - use the 7-zip format.. trust me you'll like it ;) also a good time to remove that illegal copy of winzip you've had past it's shareware limit)

http://www.almico.com/speedfan410.exe (similar to motherboard monitor.. but better in my opinion.. )

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...id=zadb_zadown (by far and away the best free personal firewall)

The Ad-Aware 6: Reference Guide by Winchester73 from Bop's list above is well worth a read. I scanned using adaware's custom scan and found a lot of stuff that this mornings scan didn't

Hi

This is a nice piece of freeware, it examines your machine and reports any security or cosmetic fixes that are available and downloads them. Saves you the trouble of going to windows update, and even catches some fixes that windows update does not report.

Regards.

You'll find all the freeware you need here , but just in case here's two more:

and

I swear by Window Sizer:

http://www.voidnish.com/articles/Sho...de=windowsizer

Tiny, simple and yet indispensable for me, writing intranet pages for a business still riddled with 800x600 res monitors, while I enjoy a whopping 1280x1024. All it does is to re-size the active window on your screen to the dimensions you specify. But it saves me a lot of hassle switching my own screen res.

I've used bigfix for over three years and i agree it often tells you of things that windows update doesnt (Microsoft Baseline does as well). However i've not had any updates reported by bigfix in over three months

Hi

To be honest, its the first time I've used it in months lol. I'd guess you were using windows 98, the same as me, since windows XP came out there have been very few updates for windows 98 so maybe thats why.

Thats strange and a bit worrying since there have been critical updates recently  do you have the function of updating in the background switched on?

Tch! Far too much IT and not enough chemistry in this list of freeware. :)

Try this periodic table which allows you to set start and finish temperatures and watch the elements change phase as the temperature rises or falls. Fascinating!

I think I can safely say that I've not required the use of a periodic table for over 16 years.

You never can tell when it might come in useful (but don't ask me for an example).

i do know but i dont let it auto install. Make it let me know what there is.

But bigfix runs as soon as it boots up so should be first in line to tell me

Disable it, reboot and then turn it back on? Might be a file corruption somewhere?
Are you running SP2 at all?
