Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
How to set up your broadband connection without the cd.
N.B. this only applies to stand alone cable modems and assumes the use of windows 2000 or xp. The procedure for windows 98 is slightly different †“ Please post for assistance. Firstly I recommend that you donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t use the usb cable to connect the modem. The Ethernet connection will give you better performance. If you donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t have an Ethernet card in your system you can pick one up and fit it for around £10.00 The first step is to temporarily disable any firewall software on your pc. Firewallââ‚à ƒ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s can create problem with getting a lease and halt the registration process. You now need to power down both the pc and the cable modem. Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the pc. Now power up the cable modem and let it settle down 5-10 Minutes. Once the cable modem is ready you can power up the computer. When the computer has booted into windows click on start then run. In the box type command.com and press enter. In the black box type ipconfig /all †“ you will see a String of information and all the adaptors in the system. Look for the Ethernet adaptor on the list. You should see under the entry †œ ip address †œ a number. This is your ip address. If the number is all 0ââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s or has an address starting 169 then you need to type the following. Ipconfig /release †“ wait 10 seconds and then type ipconfig /renew. You should see a message confirming that a new address has been obtained. You now need to open a browser window and check that you donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t have a proxy set. To do this click on tools, internet options and then connections. Now click on the lan settings button and make sure that nothing is ticked. Click o.k. and type the following into the Address bar at the top https://autoreg.autoregister.net/ . This will take you to the registration page. You will need the mac address of the cable modem (on the underside of the modem) the pin number on the letter you received from NTL and one of the following serial numbers †“ for a set top box †œntl-ct8-cb487 †œ †“ for a stand alone cable modem †œntl-ct8-cj486 †œ Follow the onscreen instructions and presto †“ You will be up and running. - Dont forget to re-enable your firewall and update windows with all the patches from the windows update site. Guide updated on 20/02/04 †“ thanks to the following members for there input †“ Jimbo, Debsy42 and Sociable. |

Thanks Stuart, I'll make this sticky... Do you think it is better if I place 'Broadjump' before CD in the title, so people searching for help on this can find this thread easy? :)

Not sure if just a NW thing but you have to enter a serial number, it's "ntl-ct8-cj486" in the registration process for cable modem NB for stb registration it's "ntl-ct8-cb487" |

Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
great post.
I am all for ethernet over usb, but seems I have been forced to use usb for my cable modem (only thing stopping me disabling usb on my system). When I tried to use ethernet for my modem it was stuck on a 169.x ip address I tried ip /release and ip /renew, but nothing ever happened and this was with the firewall turned off. Now I can't remember exactly what I did because this was months ago and to be honest it has been working fine on usb, but I would like to give ethernet another shot, in ethernet is the modem still supposed to appear in device manager and you setup the ip on the cable modem device (same as usb) or do you get the ip address assigned to the ethernet card, last time I tried I think it wasn't listed in device manager and I was using release and renew on the ethernet card. Thanks |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
no it wont show in device manager , just your nic will :)
|
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
then this means I followed the correct procedure last time, I did ip/renew and the returned error was the dhcp server failed to renew your ip address.
|
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !

it could be that it was just bad timing as i had a lot of dhcp errors a while ago and this has now cleared up :) |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
I have had the self same thing...............installed win xp but now am stuck with a 169 IP address although to be honest it connects so much better now i've got rid of win me im happy as a sand boy connecting through USB.......still would like to know how i can fix it

Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
All Stand Alone Cable Modems (SACM) need to bind themselves to the new Ethernet connection by having a full reboot of the modem by powering down and then connecting the ethernet cable and powering back up the modem. This associates the modem with the Ethernet card (NIC). This process has to be repeated any time the connection is changed either to or from USB or simply from one NIC to another.
One option if you are stuck on the default Windows 169.xx.xx.xx address when trying to use ethernet for a SACM after having done the above is to do a full initialising of the modem by then disconnecting the modem from everything. (i.e. also disconnect from the main NTL cable once the power is off) Then power the modem back up with the cable still disconnected. Then power down the modem again and reconnect the main NTL cable and let the modem settle down and get its correct IP from NTL and at this point do a full reboot on the PC itself leaving the modem switched on so that it retains the connection. Windows should then see the correct connection on the modem after the reboot and not assign the default 169.xx.xx.xx address which actually indicates a failure to detect a "live" connection. With some SACM models there is also an extra option to do an internal reset of modem by making use of a pinhole which will be seen on the back of the modem close to the RJ45 socket (In those models with that feature). This procedure is done with the modem still connected to the main power not during a reboot btw. One of the above, or a combination of both, should get the modem giving a true IP to Windows and restoring a working connection via the ethernet card in most cases where a SACM is being used. In the case of Set Top Boxes the procedure is somewhat different as any new NIC has to have its MAC address registered on the NTL network. I don't have the details to hand for that full process but I am sure somebody will add this detail in due course. As with the original advice, these extra things to try are best done with any firewall turned off as this could interfere with the process but don't forget to reset the firewall once the new connection is working correctly. Hope this helps. |

[QUOTE=Sociable] / Snip / [QUOTE]
Thanks Sociable......... NB - make sure that you are releasing and renewing the correct interface as some users may have multiple ethernet cards. It may be an idea to disable the unused interfaces when setting up the cable modem via ethernet. |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
ahhh thanks guys, it looks to me the problem I had was I wasn't rebooting the modem after unplugging the usb, one last question.
If I do this does this mean its going to force an ip change as I would like to keep the same ip I have had for months. |

Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
Hi
I've cancelled my NTL TV package but will be keeping 600k broadband, so will need to move from STB to cable modem. I connect through a Netgear FR114W firewall/router, which currently acts as DHCP client to the STB and NATs through to the PC. It spoofs my PC's MAC address. The PC runs XP. NTL told me I'll need to register by running one of their CDs (presumably Broadjump). I'd rather avoid running this and don't want to connect direct to NTLWorld without using my firewall. Can I use this method (or a variation of it) to set up my cable modem when it arrives or is this complicated by moving from the STB? TIA |

Don't know if it's just a coincidence but I did a fresh clean reinstall on Sunday of winxp pro...there was nothing left on pc...all ntl stuff GONE...since then I have been pinging game sites at sub 40...whereas previously we were looking at 50 to 100 on good days.
Is it coincidence or has ntl install stuff acting the same as nasty spyware? Just curious. |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
Moving from set top box to cable modem using this guide worked like a dream. Thanks guys! I left my PC on throughout and just rebooted the firewall/router after cable modem installation. According to ZDNet (http://specials.zdnet.co.uk/misc/ban...edtest500.html), I now have 581Kbps download speed, slightly faster than before.
A couple of minor points which might be of use to someone: 1. I'd forgotten that I'd set my firewall/router to use non-NTL DNS addresses. Not surprisingly, the registration process didn't like that. All ok after re-setting the firewall/router to get DNS automatically. 2. I had been told by customer services that I could keep my original username (i.e. email address etc). However, the registration software wouldn't let me - I could have migrated a dial-up account but not an ex- set top box broadband account. A quick phone call to NTL support (you didn't mis-read that, it really was quick!) confirmed that both my original and new usernames (and therefore email addresses) would be accessible from the cable modem account. |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
Ok I switched to ethernet, and since I managed to get it to work I have had some problems, on every reboot I have to manually renew the device to get a external IP address which of course is very annoying, another problem is it will be a new ip address every time which to be honest is a pain because a lot of my needs require a ip address that doesnt change, stuff I use relies on ip address access lists. I dual boot Windows XP has the above problems, Windows 98 has only managed to not get a 169. address ONCE, now if I release wait 10 secs then renew it just ignores it and wont give me an external address, usb wouldnt work in win98 at all but worked perfect in windows XP.
Are the above issues in ethernet normal, I have an external ntl home cable modem. |

Set up your browser as shown in the Registration section of this site for NTL Home 120 users. If you have a new computer you may find a connection Wizard takes over. Simply make sure that you set up the connection manually using a LAN connection (never dial) and that you detect the proxy serverââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s automatically. If a proxy is specified you will not get onto the registration server to register the new MAC address. Check you have a valid IP address (one that is in the form of 81.xx.xx.<247). You should now be able to surf the Internet as before. On Windows 98SE - after a clean install, and providing the NIC drivers have been installed, the machine should acquire an IP address without problems. Start... Run... Type "winipcfg" and press [Enter]. However, you won't be able to access the Net. On the desktop should be an icon for the Internet Connection Wizard. Double-click this and choose "manual/LAN". No need to auto-detect anything. There's no need to go through the registration process again - it's not necessary and has nothing to do with being able to browse the Net or acquire a valid IP address. The Wizard doesn't run automatically neither. You should now be able to access the Net. Might be worth pointing out that once you connect to the Net your machine is vulnerable, especially if it's XP. I usually install my firewall, then connect to the Net, then download any patches. Oh and Windows 98SE by default installs the dial-up networking components, none of which are needed. So choose "Custom" when installing the OS and unclick all the Networking components. Installing a NIC driver should cause the OS to install the required TCP/IP and Client software. Just done all this myself :) |

Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
The virus(s) that you are talking about are the blaster and welchia virus's which use port 135. this traffic is now blocked by ntl, so you are at no risk of contracting them.
To register, connect the ethernet cable, then browse to https://80.5.178.26 Follow the instructions. Unplug the modem for a good minute then reconnect it, reboot the computer and your friend should be online. I cannot emphasise this enough: The first thing he should do is windows update, then make sure that he has an upto date anti-virus package, a firewall, and a spyware prevention tool. If you need links for any of these things post back and i will happily provide them. MB |

Can anyone help me get started with NTL cable Modem please.
Both last weekend and this weekend I have followed the process described by Startbe and the modem re-boot as described by Sociable on 21st Feb. I am not getting past first base! After typing ipconfig, I get the default 169 address and when I type ipconfig /release, I get "All adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and cannot be released". I have tried this many times and have ensured that the Firewall (Kerio) is disabled and Virus (AVG) is off. I also originally tried several times using the NTL CD (early October) but got an error message also relating to DHCP. (Note that I have used driveimage to back up the C-Drive and have returned the system to the state it was in before I used the NTL CD.) Any ideas what could be wrong or what the best way forward is? Any help much appreciated. |

I actually have now succeeded thanks to a very helpful person at NTL. It turned out that I have a non-working Ethernet , probably due to the driver. on trying USB all is well. I guess that when I tried USB some weeks ago the NTL registration site was down so I assumend that both routes were equally unusable. Anyway, I now have to update my drivers and try switching to Ethernet in due course. Thanks again for the offer, I may yet need some help! :tu: |

Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
If it's a small silver unit with a row of LEDs along the front it's a Stand Alone Cable Modem. If it large (size of a VCR or Sky digibox) it's a Set Top Box. STBs can receive TV channels, SACMs only used for broadband.

Just a note to add to all this, I know I used to work for ntl but I think the SACM is the best broadband product out there. Ethernet as a choice out of the box, for those that can type in a IP address it sets it self up. Once your SACM is registered you can change computers just by resetting it. I added a wireless router again to ours and had it online in less then 2 mins. Just not possible to do that on adsl with all the settings that have to be entered.
I've worked for a adsl isp so I have seen the other side and it is far from rosy. (re-install drivers a few times is the 1st tech support diagnostic). Mark |

If you're using ethernet, then it isn't really much different. Pretty much the same as in the first post, FWIR, but if you want to check your IP, use "winipcfg" (Start>Run>winipcfg) rather than ipconfig. It really is quite simple. More info at - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...p.html#without then http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.../basicset.html then the manual part here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...er.html#ntlreg You just need to make sure your ethernet card has TCP/IP installed, & is set to obtain IP automatically. Power everything off, connect up, power up the modem & let it boot, power up the PC, then do the online registration. |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
Hi,
I am trying to help my neighbour who was connected to bb on Wednesday. When the engineers installed the modem, no installation disc was left, and although i have tried following the advice of this thread, i am still unable to get connected. My neighbour has been connected to bb by sacm (does bluetooth sound right?) on the 1mb service. XP SP2. So i followed the instructions above in 'Stuartbe's' post, Start-run In box typed command.com then enter. In black box typed 'ipconfig /all' Found ethernet adaptor onlist and then 'ip address' 192.168.0.1. - This is as far as i can get. So i called the CS and spoke to a person who said that i should have been left a disc, as some 'drivers' were missing and i would'nt be able to register until i received a disc - this i was told will be in about 10 days. So i was wondering if its possible to get connected without having to wait for the disc. I am afraid that i am not very pc minded (my neighbour even less) - talk about the blind leading the blind! Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Many thanx Staffie. :D;) |

Hi
To get the 2mb upgrade I am changing from the STB to a SACM. I have read through this post a couple of times and am still a bit flaky on the change over procedure. I already have registered (STB connection) and have a e-mail address from that registration that I do not want to loose. If I remember the reg process it is a simple questions and answers thing, but do I put in my old old details from my very first welcome letter? Re-registering will give me a new user name and e-mail wouldn't it? If thats the case could this be taken as two accounts and double charged? As you can tell I am a little confused and if you could put me straight, that would be most appreciated. Cheers N4sty |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
Use your original info to re-register the modem but no you don't lose your email address that you are already using, all you are doing is registering the hardware against your NTL account again.

Yesterday I was told I will have to wait 4 weeks for it and now you tell me I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t need it after all! On thing that intrigues me. Currently my 98SE system is linked to Broadband via USB and to a 6 switch hub via the ethernet connector (which I use to link to my portable). You seem to imply I can link everything together via the Ethernet connector. Sorry to be dumb but how do you do this? |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
:welcome:
You can indeed :tu: You woill need a router rather than a switch though... Power everything off, the connect the cable modem to the router, and then pcs to the router. Power everything back up and hey presto :) |
Re: Cable Modem Setup Without the Broadjump CD !
Thanks for that. sounds like I need to get me a cheapish 4 hub router. I also have a networked printer. I think I can link that through my hub - is that right? also can you recommend a router - my hub is netgear I guess they'd be OK?
