NTL Generous or what?

My 600 broadband appeared to be in a turbo mode, I am downloading stuff at 80Kps on a continuous basis, has anybody experienced this ?

70's average for me, downloaded a few things before at 110 though! This is my worry about upgrading to 1Mbps, is it goin to be all that much faster?

I have NTL 600k thru Set Top Box->Router->Network Card

I get an average speed of 60-70k tho i often see speeds of above 80 and even above 100 and yes, these speeds are real.

The theory is, is that with NTL you don't get a definite QoS (Quality of Service) like you do with ISDN and Leased Lines so youre Modem will grab all the bandwidth it can muster, be this below the rated limit of 600kilobits or whatever or above.

Do you see these high speeds when you start downloading a file, i.e. just after you've chones where to save it?
This will happen then as IE has alread started d/l the file into the cache, but only starts working out the speed etc when you click OK on the save to box.

you may get bursts of speed that fast but there is no way it is going to be that fast really , how about dl'ing summat from say somewhere like microsoft and timing it to see what you are really getting , on the 1mb connection i have , i sometimes see 130-140 k / s , but it aint really that fast :(

Nah mines consistant throughout a download, what ever size the file is!

When i mentioned earlier about getting 110 K/s, it was when i downloaded W2K SP4. Was extremely surpirsed at the speed. I thought it may have something to do with the host at times!

Yer i used to go by that, then realised its not too reliable. When I can see a dowload is noticably faster i'll jus clock the time its takes to download, then calculate from the file size. Cant say i do that very often, i do have better things to do with me life!

EDIT:
Just did the Speed Test on Rob Walkers site, confirms it:
Quote:

1st 128K took 1822 ms = 71939 Bytes/sec = approx 599 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1813 ms = 72296 Bytes/sec = approx 602 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1843 ms = 71119 Bytes/sec = approx 592 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1792 ms = 73143 Bytes/sec = approx 609 kbits/sec
Its always been said (on nthw) to be a reliable and efficient speed test!

What that test shows is you are getting close to the 600k you are paying for no more no less. :)

LOL Same here which is why I use Sky for TV. Don't use phone enough to worry about that so NTL still get my money for that too. (For now anyway.)

Yep, that speed test confirms you have a 600k connection.

This cannot run any faster than 75K bytes/sec whatever you may think - or some dodgy software may tell you (in fact, it will never run at 75k).

The same applies to a 1M connection (theoretical max of 128K bytes/sec).
