ntl wythenshawe

Right then here's the puzzle.

I rang my CS today to make 3 complaints. (save them up and kick off all at once you see)

The girl I spoke to rang me back but when my phone rang the number was an 0117 number and not an 0161 number. The girl also had an accent but I am no good at placing them.

Any ideas why I was not speaking to Wythenshawe?

Where was I speaking to?

so why was I speaking to Bristol and not Wythenshawe?

When call up if there are CS staff without calls and all at your nearest one are busy you are diverted to the call center that has staff without calls.

That is how BT have always done it and the idea isn't a bad one. Why wait in a que if there is someone in a call center in another part of the country not busy.

This is ntl though and judging by the time that is spent by many people waiting for cs to answer the phone I doubt they use that system.

BTW This can also happen if you don't enter your phone number when prompted ( which is actually a very good idea imo)
;)

I wasn't even aware of a call centre in Bristol.

a4pacific 05-07-2003 12:39

Didn't Wythenshawe site had a big fire? Has the office been reopened?

peterska2 05-07-2003 13:51

i didnt know about there being a call centre in bristol.

the wythenshawe office never actually closed apart from the day of and the day after the fire

Tricky 05-07-2003 14:17

Wonderfull world of call routing, site a will get 80% of calls with site b getting the rest. Done in the telco network and is managed by call centres to ensure that call waiting times are reduced (ha!)?

my guess!?

I usually always get to speak to the lovely staff at Manchester:) It just takes a bloody hour sometimes. Perhaps the call centre was swamped and you got diverted to a less busy one.

I drive past the Wythenshawe building occasionally (just yesterday in fact).

The wing where the fire was is still unusable IMO, the damaged roof just being sheeted over with plastic and the grounds below fenced off. There doesn't appear to have been any repairs attempted yet.

It looks like ntl have permanently vacated that wing as the "For rent" signs are up and the ntl logo signs for that section are missing. (Although I'm not sure if ntl ever occupied 100% of the building). I understood a lot of staff from there transferred to the Baguley building ??

Correct - they certainly couldn't go back in after the fire...

scrotnig 07-07-2003 08:41

Here's the facts on Wythenshawe.

The damaged area has not been reoccupied, no staff have been back there. Just over a third of the building is still in use, which was undamaged by the fire. The centre was only closed for a day after the fire, the undamaged portion was reoccupied almost immediately, although main reception and canteen areas are in the damaged section so are out of use. Some staff were moved to another location.

Don't know if the damaged section has been handed back or not.

The For Rent signs have been up for over a year now though. They are not new and were not put there because of the fire.

I know that Steve but I can't help it unless you want to start a petition to bring back Kerry-Anne ;)

Maybe mail AG with the list of names too ;)

Where did some of the people go after the fire? Is there another office local??

Quite a lot of people where moved to an office in Baguley which is about 1.5 miles away.

The rest stayed in the unaffected third of the wythenshawe building but are stressing coz they are hotdesking and are used to having their own fixed desks.

In true ntl style the managers response was that they are sorry for the inconvinence caused.

:D :D :D

My understanding is the hot desking stopped a bit back.

Here in the Baguley building we had to do that for a short while because at short notice there were insufficient desks with PCs available. We didn't mind because we just wanted to get everything up and running again ASAP.

That's now sorted and there's no hot desking here.

peterska2 07-07-2003 21:37

Well last time I was in there (6 weeks ago now :() they were still hot desking at wythenshawe.

I stayed there and was fed up with it after 3 days.

BTW dunno if anyone else picked up on this but there is only one way out from the second floor so surely that is a breach of the fire safety regulations

The Diplomat 07-07-2003 23:07

I think that depends on the number of people there and their location in respect of the fire exit.

For a single escape route, no point in an office should be more than 18m from a 'protected' area (this could be a fire resistant corridor or staircase).

In any event, upper storeys should have more than one escape stair if the number of occupants for each storey exceeds 500 or the floor space exceeeds 900 sqm (in which case at least one of the staircases needs to be a 'firefighting' stair which have very strict regulations for fire and smoke resistance).

There are of course pages and pages of regulations regarding Fire Safety affecting all manner of things from means of escape, fire resistance and access for fire fighters, but I think the above is enough for now !!) :smokin:

The remaining operational sections of the Wythenshawe office have been fully inspected by Fire Safety officers and they are more than satisfied with the arrangements apparently.

The upper storey is only a very small area, as most of the upper (second floor) areas were the ones that were damaged in the fire, as that is where the fire apparently started.

The majority of the Wythenshawe office only has two floors, not three, anyway, so only a small area is involved here.
