Gameboy Advance / Gameboy Advance SP

Does anyone have any insider knowledge about these please. :)

I am looking to buy my son one for his birthday and would like to know which one to get. Are they going to phase out the GBA?

I think all the games can be played on both.

What advantage is there with the new SP model?

Any help appreciated please. :)

The SP has a better screen & also is lit-the GBA is crap in the wrong lighting conditions.

[Edit]-good article/comparison/review here: http://www.cnet.com/Nintendo_Game_Bo...?tag=pdtl-list

I've got a GBA that I bought cos I used to write GB games (for fun not profit!) and have never really used it (Screen quality is C**P much better on SP)

i would like to suggest you wait for a sony PSP, the handheld console from the makers of the hugely successful playstation 2, its going to have a wide variety of games, plus they will not be conversions of PS2 games as sony are keen to provide new games for it.

http://www.gamespot.com/all/news/news_6078174.html

or get a second hand SP and cut your losses ;)

But The sony PSP is ages away, and no-ones actually seen it working yet, (although i think it may be good!) the GBA SP is a safe bet for now, its hugely popular and has a massive game catalogue!

There are always new things coming out such as the Nintendo DS but if you always said that then you wouldnt buy anything, espcially when its electronical stuff! But True the PSP is something to look out for at the end of the year - but itll come with a much higher price tag!

trust me, if sony continue to sign up developers for it, and they produce quality stuff then it will be a success in the past i have been right, i bought an xbox on day 1, and look at the xbox now its evolved in to an excellent challenger to sony i didnt even fllinch when the GC was going to be launched i didnt like the games and knew it was not going to get anywhere

but i did say get a used SP, i didnt say dont get one :)

slightly off the thread - have an sp, believe there is a way to use it as a mp3 player with a smart media card (not the cheaper compact flash) anyone have a clue if I might be able to do this or did I just dream it?
Cheers.

You need something like this
http://www.gamestech.com/Game_boy_Ad..._adapter/m.htm
which is available in the UK

Thanks but both still use compact flash - I'm sure if I could find the official ones they use smart media instead - I have a digital camera that runs of smart media so it would be exceptionally useful to go with the same card.

The nintendo DS movie player is cool, but playing movies on the PSP is so much better.

Re: Gameboy Advance / Gameboy Advance SP

It depends PSP is more of a media player at the moment and will not have a large number of games, especially decent ones, for a while. Sony are also keen to market its movie and music playing abilitys. Obviously an iPod or similer mp3 player is better for music and I wonder about the popularity of dvds on the move. Also you can use memory sticks to put MPEG 4 videos on the PSP but for movies you need the USD format disk and not many movies are out for that yet. (can anyone say mini-disk?).

For pure quality of games the obvious choice is a SP or DS. Remember a DS can also play GBA games only you cannot use link cables so multiplay is out of the question. On the other hand you can play DS games.

There are already a large number of games for the PSP and there will be about 20 or more when it launches here. the 6 games I have are very good.

You can fit a full movie on a 512MB mem stick however it will not match the quality of a UMD purchased film, with its menu and some that feature DVD like extras. I think there are already about 10 UMD movies out is the USA so far. I got Spiderman 2 free with my PSP and the quality is amazing.

I have (had) 3 GBA's (1 per child) until one got it's screen broke (unless anyone has a spare?) and I can see that we will be having 3 x SP before too long.

They dont arf keep em quiet in the car on long journeys.

Yep, ain't that the truth. My missus and the little 'un will be going on holiday next month, which is a 2½ hour drive to Gatwick, followed by a 2 hour flight. Thank God for GBA!!! :D
