Newsflash

Have you heard the latest news at ntl Cardiff?

Chimaera 03-07-2003 22:02

no peterska, what is it?????

peterska2 03-07-2003 22:06

and it isnt a rumour it is correct.,

scrumhalf 03-07-2003 22:07

I didnt see that thread, but if the "rumour" you refer to is the redundancies, then i can caonfirm it 100%, as my wife has been told today that she is to be made redundant.

peterska2 03-07-2003 22:07

and i thought that you wanted to cause ntl greif not protect them

Chimaera PM me

scrumhalf 03-07-2003 22:09

Begining of Sept it is to close, with a further 1 months wages being paid. Wife been there 5 years and will walk away with 4 months wages tax free. Still shit, but a lot more than the statutory minimum they have to pay by law.

is that all that she is getting?

that is terrible.

Chimaera 03-07-2003 22:11

So what's the reasonong behind that, then?
Not seen anything in the financial pages.

scrumhalf 03-07-2003 22:12

Jobs can be applied for in the Newport or Swansea offices, but i think she`s going to take the package and apply to go to the 118 118 call center. Still, lots of time yet anyway. She`s still on maternity for another 3 months, so she wont be going back to NTL full stop.

Martin 03-07-2003 22:13

Oh dear job losses are always bad to hear!:(

You just know that is because they did a good job and ntl dont like people who do that

Looking on the bright side at least she wont have to put up with the BS anymore.

Shame that they are all having to go though

Some top guys down there.

M8, im telling you, its not a rumour, its a FACT. And its been on the card for a long time. It makes perfectly good buisness sense. NTL dont own the building in cardiff. It is leased, and apparently the lease is up. With the restructuring of the company, and faults being maintained in Belfast now, renweing the lease was never an option. Its a bummer, but from our point of view, there are plenty of part time jobs out there (forgot to mention she`s part time) for her. Although i doubt any other company offers anywhere near the incentives NTL has done/does.

I take it you dont work in NTL Cardiff, coz if you did, you would have been informed today of your pending redundancy.

Sorry to hear about your missus and everyone else scrumhalf, it's very unsettling when you lose a job.
Hopefully they will be able to find something else - fingers crossed. :)

I know what it is like Andre I have been there myself.

but I have had this confirmed by a number of people and know that it is correct.

Yes there are going to be unhappy people but ntl's customers have a right to know that their CS is going to be affected by the loss of 96 staff.

If anyone has a problem with my posting this then they can PM me.

no it's not but you know the way that ntl work

i'm amazed they gave them notice and didn't just tell them all to clear out their desks and don't come back

scrumhalf 03-07-2003 22:27

60 days notice being given, which isnt bad as stautory is 30 days as under 100 people being made redundant. Ive seen so many firms making people redundant lately, and have to say NTL are giving a fairly decent package.
Most firms nowadays pay stat minimum of 1 week for every years service age 21-42 and 1.5 weeks from 42-65 subject to a maximum of 30 weeks.
So it could be a lot worse.

The building was a bit like a ghost town last time I went in there!

Planning who were once quite a large department would now fit in a phonebox, if this is true does it affect fault management as well as customer services then?

Yes, I know what redundancy is like. Been through it twice but fortunately in my case I was more than happy on both occassions.
My only regret is not being made redundant by ntl, I had enough and left after the first planning for growth.
If I had just waited another 6 months, the 14 years service would of been a nice payoff!

I wen't through a situation about 18 months ago that was actually quite awkward, I was very happy with being made redundant but another guy was devestated and just didn't want to accept it. I think the under threat BS is terrible for people in that situation.

I got called 130 miles into the office to be told and the HR woman said, If I knew how you were going to take it I could of told you on the phone, apparently one person jumped across the desk and grabbed her.

I just thought great, I have worked for them for 8 months and they are giving me nearly £15k to say goodbye. I saw a positive side in my situation, unfortunately I guess I am in the minority.

even though it was good for me, I feel bad for the ones who have mortgages, debts, kids etc and possibly a big task to find another job:(

Martin 03-07-2003 22:33

If they close CS won't that put presh on the other call centers and add too an even lengthy wait on the line to speak to someone?

It's a big shame that there are honestly many employees in ntl that would take the money tomorrow, some have even put their names forward as I did when I worked for them.
Unfortunately it's the worst thing to do in ntl, because once they know you want out they appear to make things so bad that you leave without the dosh

I guess it's hard to believe that poeple actually want redundancy with the present climate, but constant pressure and poor treatment has taken ot's toll on a lot of them. Some of them actually feel bitter because thet didn't get it last time.

But lets not forget the ones that will be torn apart by the news, I have every deepest sympathy for even the ones who say ntl can do no wrong.

I must say that rumours about the Cardiff building were happening over two years ago, and it has become apparent that a certain guy with a little bit of an Irish accent! has been moving everything into his own back yard.

I had a message from someone who attended an introduction session a few months ago when he was employed by ntl in Belfast, he said that guy openly stated that he was going to make Belfast the centre of excellence for Broadband.

He intended to have everything on his patch, I guess it's just the thin end of the wedge with more changes to follow. The same happened with wales when they moved all the power to Glasgow and then when it went to the Midlands. If there is another structure change, who knows all the jobs could come back to Wales.

If any ntl employees are reading these posts, don't vent your anger at us. Aim it at the source of the problem, I don't think anyone who hates ntl as a company wants to see people out of work,

btw: did you guys know that ntl had the Cardiff building built for them, and sold it to a pension company before they moved in!
thats why they rent it, the money problems go way back before most people were aware!

All the Cardiff Customer Care and Admin staff have my deepest sympathy, I've spoken to several already, including Scrumhalfs wife. Its a sad day. All the Celtic Customer Care will move to Glasgow (and no it doesn't take 3 - 6 hours to get through.)

Escapee, workforce will still be based in Cardiff. It also seems to be stated that Belfast get it easy, I don't think so. The Irish accented one may happen to be based there, shouldn't be taken out on the staff though as they didn't decide it.

I wouldn't take it out on Belfast people, allthough I did have many verbals when departments were wiped out in Wales to save cwc jobs in the Midland during planning for growth.

I think the Tony Blair type smile from the Irish one is to be treated with caution! I certainly know from experience.
I guess you prabably know as well as I do, in ntl structures have generally lasted about 2 years. Then they will change back to a version of an earlier theme.

"Oh things are not working lets change the structure"

If the Irish one were to leave! who knows what would happen, I guess the next strongest empire builder would get it in his own back yard.

The baddies are ntl not the employees, although bad ones do seem to flourish especially in managemeny positions.:(

I wouldn't normally mention personal things that happen on another site, but I dont think/hope the thread they removed by me on the other site was taken out of context by affected or worried employees.

One person, an ntl employee seemed to take the oppertunity to vent all his anger in my direction instead of channelling it to the real source. (I guess it could of been a ploy to get me to take the brunt) It seems that someone mentioning the word redundancy or hinting will become the brunt of all the bad feeling.
As I said I know how they treat people at ntl, and it just shows in the way that they have picked 96 people again, just to stay under that magical 100 figure (for ntl) as they did last time.

I have stated often that ntl will do whatever is necessary to toe the line with their new owners, they have to take any measures they can to meet targets. Some departments are receiving horrendous treatment and many of the employees in these departments think the company is hoping these actions will make them leave to save redundancy money.

I would just like to add this, look around, take note in the near future and just mark my words as follows.

The pro-ntl employees will be very quiet or try to steer discussions away from this subject with this bad news about, but they will resume normal service and continue to praise the service and actions of their employer as soon as they think we have forgotten about the people sadly affected by the job cuts.
Give it a short while and they will of conveniently forgotten about it, not something the affected or all the other worried employees can do though:(

People who stick up for the bad actions of their employers, I hate them. they are just as bad!

The above is just typical of someone who want's everyone to think that I am gloating at people losing their jobs.

it is very easy to miss the point that I have been in exactly the same situation whilst working for ntl, it was after 5 months of being under threat and after countless poor treatment and failed promises that I didn't wait for he bullet but walked.

(many more are feeling the same now)

I suffered serious stress and psoriasis due to the companies actions, and was rather silly not to go to a doctor and take time off sick. I got as far as phoning for an appointment to be told I would have to wait 2 weeks for a meeting with my doctor.
Do you or anyone else honestly think I want to gloat and wish that sort of thing on average ntl worker?

i am not a disgruntled customer who want's to blame every single person in ntl for my problem.

If people here or anywhere else feel that I am gloating about another example of ntl people treating employees like s**t please PM me, and I culd probably enlighten you a bit more towards my feelings for badly treated ntl employees.

btw: I have been told this morning that all departments of ntl were told by mid day ysterday, so it was hardly something confidential was it.

It is easy for you to sit/stand/hover there and say that because the majority of ppl did not see your post on the .com site. First of all you posted and the 'Bob a Job' thread saying...

' The news they got today was the same news i told everyone abt on here and got flamed by ntl employees'

Apoligies if not 100% accuarte on the quote, the above quote to me seems like a gloat abt your sources plz do correct me if anyone thinks i'm wrong.

Then because no-one responded to that abt 15/20 mins later you posted a thread titled 'Dunleavey Drive' asking if any1 knew when the lease was up on the office

Thats the posting of a caring person isn't it...All i have to say is that some ppl lost their jobs yesterday please think abt how when you post something those ppl are going to feel reading it, I never said we should not discuss it or that it was confidential, the ONLY thing i objected to was the way you posted it as to me and others it cam across as a 'gloat that your sources had been right' and quite frankly no-one gives a f**K

 :drunk:

Lets just have a few beers and forget abt the above :blah:

In my defence regarding my first post, I was talking about something completely different! I was talking about exactly what I said, something that I have gone on about and got flamed for.

I am still to hear if that situation actually happened, the poeple who would of been affected were in a meeting and have apparently been very tight lipped.

I would agree gloated if that situation had happened, along with many current ntl employees.

I want to bury the hatchet, (and possibly you do in my head) but would like to finally say that.

"If I or anyone else had known what was going on for a fact, and and said Ha Ha Ha guess what etc" they would deserve to be run off that site.

Nowhere in my post was any gloating, it was just a silly remark (yes, in hindsight) made that got jumped on by people who took it out of context. ie: they thought it was from someone who knew the facts.

I don't think I will actually be around on the other site to say told you so to many of the things that I have speculated, because everytime I guess right it puts another nail in my coffin.:(

Firstly let me add my voice of sympathy to those who will loose their jobs. I sufferred the same fate a few years ago and it was most unpleasant.

Regrettably these days, to most large companies, staff, offices and similar are, at the bottom line, numbers on a balance sheet to some accountant. What amazes me is the continual reinvention of the wheel with many companies, who will relocate, rationalise, amalgamate, or whatever strategy, to show a nominal saving on a balance sheet in three or four years time, despite the affect on morale.

Many companies realise that one of their prime assets is in fact their staff. It is their staff who provide a key resource, and the interface that enables customers to do business, and thus the company to earn money. For companies like ntl, who's physical assets lie in it's infrastructure, the accountants can only see staff as a cost, in the outgoing of wages, rather than income of fees.

Lastly, I have seen reference to criticism of ntl having owned the cardiff building and then sold it to a pension company. This is for many companies sound business practice as a means of raising capital, and placing the risk of ownership on others. It is practived by large and small corporations alike, many of them blue chip. If your business is not property ownership, why have your capital tied up in it, instead of being able to spend it on assets that increase your fundamental business, i.e in ntl's case, their networks.

That takes the local handling of calls idea out again, its not surprising said it would happen with the price rises and the CAP

WTF has the 'CAP' got to do with this ?

How many people have been contacted reference their usage ?How many of those have been disconnected ?

You could say you have a 'cranefly in your cap' over what has , from what I can see, turned out to be a load of fuss about nothing.

(sorry for going a touch OT but th'engineer keeps bringing it up.)

The CAP makes BB from NTL unpopular therefore less customers less revenue less jobs or job losses.

It called Elastic and inelastic pricing the Broadband product is inelastic therefore changes make it less attractive to the buyer.
If the competition has beetter products for less or same price.

The job losses have NOTHING whatsoever to do with the "CAP".

NOTHING.

Bloody hell grow up.

Exactly, I wouldn't of liked that job to be honest but it's people livings. My flames and disgust were aimed at the management and anyone who thinks different should ask before they judge me.

Hands up those who think it will be the last time they do this:(

Does anyone think the management that made the decision are interested in anything other than the balance sheet, they don't want any discussion/dirty laundry talked about in public because it's bad news for them. It seems that long gone are the days when companies released a press statement striaght away about these sort of situations, they probably hope that it will not get into the press and receive comments about it affecting the allready poor service by ntl as a company.

I wouldn't like to count the number of times that a region such as Wales has been re-organised, re-structured, bundled in with this that and the other region. There has allways been a two year life cycle to ntl plans involving structures and regions.

Exactly and the accountants can see exactly what the daily tasks are for these peopel affected, they are treating a lot of other "back room" departments the same. No one will shout about these people going because their jobs are not usually visible to the accountants and general public/customer.
ntl has hemmoraged (spelling) too many good technical people over the last four years, it can't continue and is the reason for many big network issues taking so long to resolve.

The guys on networks will tell you this is true, along with poor management at a regional level.

Technicians/Engineers in the field will leave when the market picks up, hang on...I better be wrong, or i will be accused of giving out company confidential information. :(

That is true, but a company selling what's at the end of the day a technical product like ntl, will not retain customers if there are not the employees in place to service those products to the customers satisfaction.

ntl have used the old method of cutting back, and cutting back on staff until the business is affected. This will then show the minimum level of staff that they can get away with.

Unfortunately for the infrastructure and the efficient running and maintenance of these, the problems caused by these sort of decisions in departments looking after them take a long time to show.

It's a bit like not bothering to service your car, performance gradually drops until one day it dies. the garage then hands you a very large bill and says

"Well sir the engine wouldn't be wrecked if you had changed the oil and the cambelt, the tyres wouldn't be worn uneven if you had the traking done, the discs wouldn't be scored if you changed the brake pads, and the driveshaft wouldn't be worn if you had changed the leaking gaitor"

It really is very similar:(

The cap is unpopular with a small minority of heavy broadband users who care enough about their service and what they use it for 1/ to understand what the cap is and 2/ to be in any way bothered about it.

I would say that the vast majority of broadband users have never heard of it and most of those that have don't know how/if it applies to them.

Thus while one or two folks might have exercised their commercial right to ditch ntl because of the cap, it is highly unlikely that the cap accounts for any significant 'churn' of ntl customers.

Moreover, the integration process has involved a number of internal reorganizations of our business as we continue to strive for better performance. These reorganizations have typically
involved, among other things, the termination of employees made redundant as a result of the process. Although we cannot predict precisely the effect that this has had, it is likely these
internal reorganizations have negatively impacted employee morale. If we undertake additional internal reorganizations they will similarly likely negatively impact employee morale. Negative
effects on employee morale can have a negative effect on our operations generally.

In my experience this kind of euphemistic management waffle is in itself a major cause of 'negative impacts on employee morale'. The complete communications company ought to consider communicating with its employees in plain English.

Let's be clear here, 'terminating an employee' could be defined as 'removing a person's ability to pay the mortgage and feed and clothe his/her family'. I know it's sometimes a necessary part of business but trying to hide behind semantics helps no-one but the person that has to break the bad news.

It wouldn't have been of much use - I believe the people being made redundant are ntl: Business CS reps, as opposed to ntl: home.

scrumhalf 04-07-2003 16:43

OK...here is my two penneth worth.

First off, excuse my spelling as ive been up the club.... :)
As you know from my previous posts in this thread, my wife is to be made redundant from the NTL call center in cardiff. I myself have never worked for them.

However, NTL HAVE to be the worst run company in the history of any corporation. The management is **** poor, but the
normal "lamen" on the ground has to put up with the shit. The is understand completely. There is nothing worse than losing yer CM connection and then being told even though they know there is a problem with a local UBR, they cant send anyone out untill at least 4 people have called in to report the fault

On the flip side of the coin, to work for they have to be the best company out there. The promotions and benefits that are available are tremendous. The redundancy package, although isnt mega bucks, is in her case 4 X the statutory minimum.
So it looks like as per many of the EX NTL employees, its off to 118 118 call center in cardiff.

Shit happens.

:)

albone 04-07-2003 16:50

I for one have sympathy for those poor devils, who ever they are. There is nothing worse, as I found out a few years ago now. When I went in on the monday morning to work, and the whole world knew before I did, that the shop I worked for was closing! end of story, collect cards, find a new job if you can! Bye.!
So yes I can say I have a lot of sympathy with them. :(

peterska2 04-07-2003 20:11

I was told to go but every one knew about it before I even knew that there was a meeting schedualed :(

If you don't like Roger's comment, tell him about it via PM.

People are always going to make a insensitive comment that's life.

Stuart R 05-07-2003 11:04

Im sure they will... I have accepted that.

Stuart,

Roger's comment was made in response to some other comments that have been rightfully deleted.

The point that he was making is that rather than me picking a fight the other night I should have PM'd the news to one of the mods and they would have put it on the home page.

The comment was not meant to be insensitive and was not Roger having a pop at anyone either.

[note to mods/admin] see I do stick up for you really:)

An advert that's only marginally less annoying than those two ugly blokes in the 118118 ad (a service that I'd never phone simply because their ad pi$$es me off so much!)

Although I can't phone 118888 either because NTL are being really childish and only allowing access to *their* directory enquiries services and telling people that all the others are "not yet available" (or, when I phoned up to ask, they said "they aren't being supplied by those companies yet"!)

So much for "free and fair competition"!!

It's a delicate subject, and tempers running high because of it.

Any losses of jobs by redundancy are generally announced in the local newspaper through a press release by the company.

I have allways felt on these sad occassions in ntl, that the company has tried it's best to keep things low key and tell as few people as possible.

The 96 jobs are a considerable number and when added to the dribs and drabs that have been quietly made redundant since the last big shake up, it amounts to a lot more redundant than figures suggest.

I know from speaking to people in ntl over the last two years, I have been told things like quote "People are dissapearing daily" and "remember Fred Bloggs? he was made redundant last week etc" Remember these also add up and save the company giving the true story!
